I am home safely too. Thanks for a great couple of days as it was so good to meet all those people behind the names. Weather was great and the food and company even better.
Below are some more photos from today.

    Default My thoughts

    Whoa, what a weekend!!!!

With the 4 hour drive home I had plenty of time to think of all that took place during my stay in Dooen......Many of you had a longer drive so I hope you all do it safely and take in a few sights to while away the hours!!

Between my loud obnoxious music and shoveling food into my face I decided that as far as what Australia Day means to me (as I am aware that it means different things to many others) this was a perfect example of how I envisage the Australian way.

Everyone meeting, greeting and being able to put faces to names that are always popping up in threads is a treat. The amount of respect, knowledge and patience that every single person seems to have for their fellow woodworker really is a testament to what a great forum this is. Listening to stories of peoples journeys -not just woodworking, but in life- really helps you understand how their passion for woodworking has been ignited, and having others around to fuel that fire is inspirational.

With all the good natured jokes (generally at others expense), laughs, long winded stories and topped with a BBQ it really is what I would think is quintessentially Australian!!

I haven't met any (not to my knowledge anyways) toy makers before, so this was a real treat for me as well. All (and rightly so) very proud of their work, but when they talk about the joy of the kids (grandkids) when they play with their toys, thats when their faces really light up. I may feel that same joy sometime as Josh (2 months old at the time) purchased me a book for christmas this year - Great book of wooden toys - so I'll be trawling the toy making section soon annoying folk with my newcomer questions ...

The demos during the weekend by and Bob (Old Grey Beard) were fantastic and although most of the photographic information went straight over my head (and I assume Daves as he is a little shorter than me) I will at least think of my surrounds and what medium the picture will be viewed next time I take a photo.

Meeting some of the NSW crew was a real treat as I tend not to leave Vic (except for work) if I can help it. Just happy down here I guess, but who knows....if there is a GTG up there, maybe I'll put my VIC ambassador hat on for a weekend.

Pretty sure I have rambled on long enough now (I seem to have more to say online as I have time to formulate a response and think before I type, a filter that I lack in everyday life)....

A massive thanks to Dave and family for being so accommodating and hosting the whole event. It really was most enjoyable and hosting such shenanigans takes quite the effort.

To everyone who cooked, cleaned and generally helped run things, Thankyou - It was a blast

Spending tomorrow (26th) with my family is the perfect finish to what I would call a perfect Australia Day weekend.

I'll certainly pencil it in for next year if its going ahead, and maybe by then Joshua could be old enough to grasp a chisel so I'll get him up next to making a mess!!

    Cheers

    Gab

Now I better turn a couple of pens for the swap I signed up for so I can get onto making the 50 boxes (but I'm guessing it will be a little longer than Bobs impressive 70 days).

For show and tell there was a good variety of things from tool boxes & tools thru to jigs and turnings.

    Bob bought along 50 boxes

These are from the bòok by Chris Scott

Bob, aka oldgreybeard, has a thread taking you through all 50 about Dec 2014 thru to Feb / March 2015

David Mitchell also bought a home made 'holworth chuck' (the one with two rotating discs to clamp bowls ). Sadly I did not get a pic

    Thanks Fred

Another hit over the weekend was all our photo tutorials.

    This was our last session

And one of the last subjects

All in all we had 3 general sessions in the shed. A few one on one over the three days and some field lessons around the property

    Big thanks to Oldgreybeard
