Brett, what speed (strokes per minute) does it oscillate now? Would you please do a little video and put it on Youtube for us to look at?
I tried a chisel back on my motorised cast iron wheel: no good
Four things wrong, really. It is indeed too fast and it is too small in diameter. It was impossible to hold the chisel still, even resting its edge on the tool rest. The different surface speed centre to edge makes different marks on the chisel that are too difficult to remove in the next step.
Sorry, false alarm failed technique. Positive experiment result: others don't have to try that one...Cheers,
Joe

I just spent a hour making one of these. It works, but I think it will kill my drill very quickly. The drill needs quite a bit of torque. My 710W ozito hammer drill doesn't have enough torque at low revs and it just bogs down as soon as I apply pressure to the chisel on the plate. My cordless makita drill/driver has plenty of torque down in low revs, but the motor is labouring. High RPM just shakes the entire bench, and makes one hell of a racket!
Mine is just made from 12mm MDF, its what I commonly make my jigs and templates from. A baseboard with two strips to hold the slider inline, the strips are dovetail. The slider has matching dovetails. When assembling, I made sure to leave some clearance around the slider so it doesn't bind, two masking tape thickness worth of clearance. Gave it all a wax and buff and its pretty slippy. The plate is just double-sided taped to the mdf slider, I was eager to test it.
Using the 140grit diamond, it actually grabs the chisel and you end up rocking back n forwards with the movement of the plate, need somewhere to lock your arms in so they are rigid.

All in all, its a fantastic idea. My attempt needs some fine tuning and alot of thought about how to make it without it killing a drill/driver.

Try it now. This has caused an unbelievable amount of grief and all I want to is eat. Bloody Google and Adobe! Shoving their noses in where it's not needed.
