Just having a quick play with some veneer and the cedar blinds, hoping to get something that resembles at 2CV .
I just threw a few a few more layers of veneer on the roof so it should be close to 30 layers total, lots of glue hahaha!

Cheers Crowie, I need to make some sort of jig up as all the layers really like to slide around when clamped.
I was also surprised how nice the veneers looked when sanded as the glue soaks right through each layer, I was worried the colour would be off. I'm still yet to try it with Epoxy resin, I'd imagine it will look nicer but I probably won't be able to use my normal Estapol coating.

Well, seems I'm going to be making a big boy's toy for my brother, I have made a computerised camera rig up for him already but I'm doing something in timber this time.
Seems I'm making a motorised tripod with three axis movement, no fancy computer control with this one just simple buttons, a linear actuator, and two motors.
Thinking of making the tripod legs like the old Lufkin timber tripod legs, they are simple and they work.
Edit, bought the timber for the legs today, 25mm Tassie Oak dowels for the upper part and some 50x32mm Tallow wood for the lower legs
I want something like 500mm as the collapsed height so the legs may have two sliding sections.

Basically a rough draft of what is happening, still not sure if the clamp will be on the lower guide(non existent in pic) or up the top. I'm thinking a split type clamp similar to the one done fro scrap in the pic.
I'd love to be able to bore a 25mm hole up the legs so I could add an extra leg more easily but I will have to route a channel in the legs and fit an additional leg to get the desired height.
All the parts are ordered and hopefully on their way, more money gone

I had a stuff up today and drilled the lower supports at the wrong spacing and I couldn't get any wood So I've started laminating some timber but I can only do one a day due to a lack of clamps. I'll do another tomorrow morning and shape the first one up later in the day.
I whipped up some lock levers because there wasn't much else I could do, I should get my lazy susan bearing later this week which will help me design the head.
Not sure what sort of wood this is but when wet it looks fantastic, quite a colour change from white to pink-

Just a quick mock up of the leg, don't mind the bonus circles on the lower guide

I decided the upper slides looked a bit plain and I wanted to hide the(intentionally loose) half lap joint so I added a top cap and a couple of layers of veneer for a bit of colour, I have done the same for the bottom but it is currently drying.

Stupidity also meant I had to remake the locking handles, I thought when I was making them that they would probably crack when I wound the inserts in, aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnd they did, I also cracked a couple of inserts as you have to enlarge the upper section of the hole to allow for the taper.
I'm learning stuff which is good.
Looks like the finish will be some brand of orange oil, sounds as if it will do what I want.

Just have to trim the bottoms out.

Got some toys for myself today, I know they aren't perfect or complete but they were cheap so I got lots.

Also had a quick play with the Orange Oil and I like it, seems to turn red to brown but it's slippery and looks okay.

Window switches for all three ranges of movement, came across these by accident then felt like a complete moron that I didn't think of them straight away.

Also grabbed what I hoped is the last bit of timber, the guy at the yard said he didn't really know what it was when he dressed it but assumed it is Ironbark.
It seems bloody dense and is hard to sand, the hole saw is not going to have a good time, I've already had the chuck in the drill press so hot it's melted the grease and made it rain on the wood, hahahaha!
I'm hard on my gear.

Managed to get home to do a little bit of work today so I finished off the cuts on the lower legs and made a mock top plate just to see what size suits.
Bigger is easier to level but you have to spread the legs further to get decent triangulation, I also cut it so it's not an equilateral triangle so you get more access at what would be the back but I think this may be a mistake.

Got given some wood today, sadly it has some engine oil on some but it will need to be thicknessed to about 32mm so I'm pretty sure it will come up fine.
The guy that gave it to me said it was African Ironbark but that doesn't seem to exist, it is heavy and does look nice, pretty sure it will become a hallway table and the leftover used on toys.

It could be African Ironwood.
