Its been a while..but recently I was inspired to complete the next stage of my clock.Shortly after figuring out the gearing of the ratchets and which way they turned I needed to deign the innards of the ratchets. This took for ever!! But after much persistence and testing i assembled two protypes. Each of these two gears have two ratchets that are spring loaded. These should be able to resist the 16kg that they are required to hold 27/7!.
I have decided to use a motor to wind up the weights rather than by hand. This lead to a major research project that involved re-purposing the hub of a racing bike to act as my ratchet system. Pic 1 shows the exploaded hub assembly. Pick 2 shows the ratchet cut from the alley plate. Pic 3 shows the drilling of the "liberated" ratchet. Pic 4 shows the brass axel having the square shank being machined. These stop the gear from rotating. Pic 5 shows the "innards" of the ratchet. Pic 6 shows the assembled gear thing....
Next up will be to design the motor mount what size chain and cogs to use......and what electronics to use to start and stop the motor.......

Looking good Dean! I've been missing your updates.
You could use a motor such as this. A 24 volt "Electric Scooter" motor. It comes with a bike chain type cog already installed.
You might use a simple reed type switch tripped by the weight when it hits the bottom and another reed switch to turn the motor off when the weight hits the top. The motor would be on a sort of "Flip Flop" switching arrangement, tripped by the reed switched top and bottom.
Have you thought about "Maintaining Power" to keep the clock running for the few seconds while it is being wound?
Cheers
Walesey

Thanks for that walesey..
This is the motor i will be using....but I still need a speed controller. Its very torquey and a little bulky.

Hope everyone is have a great long weekend...(in australia).
Over the last week i have purchased some chain and sprockets. The sprockets inner hole size were to small and had to be faced mounted on the lathe and machined out to fit over the hub. I designed a way to attach the chain gear to the hub and have come up with this. Due to the width of the hub i have made the hub out of 4 different pieces of plywood to make up the width. The end plate is made from a hard disc as usual and is threaded with a M6 thread. Tomorrow i will re-assemble and wait for the motor mount to arrive.
cheers

Finally managed over the week end to assemble test and adjust the assembly. Fits in perfectly....the chain not so nice to look at but it wasnt available in silver. Damm
Next job the motor mount and more testing.
Later.

Hi all hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend here in NSW.
I have set up the motor and chain drive only to find that it stopped the clock turning! The motor does not freewheel in either direction and is impossible to turn over by hand. It seems that I need a clutch between the motor and drive cog. I have emailed M-Series MAGNETIC SPRING CLUTCHES - Tiny Clutch | Helander Products, Inc. these guys to see if they can help.
I have had the clock running for about 12 hrs on HALF the weight eg 8kgs instead of 16! I am not complaining but it has got me thinking why? Perhaps its winter. More pics when i get my magnetic clutch thats if its not too expensive!

Hi everyone. I have been making slow progress on the new motor design and magnetic clutch. I have decided to go for a stepper motor as they can maintain torque at low rpm's are are physically smaller.
Meanwhile i have trialled a new cam wheel that on paper wound wind the string evenly on the drum as it was being wound. In practice it failed! In theory it was meant to move the string 30mm back and forth but in practice the string just jammed in the groove.
.
I have since pulled apart a fishing reel to investigate the mechanism and have been inspired to make a mechanism similar to it. That will be after year 12 finish their major projects!!
Later...

Hi all,
Just received my new stepper motor .
I have calculated that I need is .01 N/m to lift the 8kg that i have. This motor is able to lift 2.6N.m so there is plenty in reservation. I have made a bracket to sit the motor in that is adjustable and allows the chain to be tensioned.
I have ordered an very small and expensive magnetic clutch which is on the way. It will attach on the end of the stepper motor.
More soon.
Dean.
