These things happen, it could have been a Ford!
Its up to you Keith, but why not make up the carriage track now, saves you having over 100 little pieces kicking around, also gives you something to photograph the model on during the build.

You are only working on a small scale, imagine what it is like building a length of railway. True you do not need to paint the ballast, but you need to pack it under each and every sleeper.
    Hi Kevin,

You are correct about my white Ford - I would have been devastated.

I could paint away from the clothes line I suppose

Not exactly sure of the overall length of loco / carriage combo - that is why I was leaving the base of the carriage until after it is built. I do know my overall length Cathie will allow me to take up with the combination - 3.9 metres.

    Thanks for your comments

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

Everything was going extremely well until an hour ago.

I have secured the ballast using 2 sprayings of 50% PVA Glue 50% Water. It has been hot today - it has dried off and the ballast is in place (Ballast is the stones they use in bonsai pots)

Painted and then weathered the rails using red oxide - 5 coats - came up a dream.

I masked the rails (securely I thought) and sprayed the top with "pewter". The spray has seeped onto the rusted rail in a number of spots. Will probably sand back the sides of rails - repaint and the redo the rusting. Pretty annoying 6 hours work and then hope I don't wreck the rails and top.

Put together (not in exact spot yet of course, but generally I think the tracks look OK

    Regards

    Keith

Dalboy - sorry it must be devastating.
Keith for a moment there I thought you had a section of light rail in your back yard. Looks like you still need to put in the dog spikes though.

Years ago a friend of mine started his steam roller up. Had a spray of prime, black water droplets out the chimney. On the washing line were white nappies. I do not think wife was impressed.

Perhaps we all need to be more careful where we do our hobbies

Yes spikes still need to go in Kevin. Up to the Museum today to look at some of their old carriages.

Fixed it - didn't take long. Sanded off the seepage with a manicure file. Then used a rag to give a light coat of the Bluescope Ironstone and then gave it a couple of coats of red oxide wash for the "rusted" effect

Just be careful there. We might want to come over for a manicure as well as admire your models (and Cathie's quilts).

    Welcome anytime - but I don't do manicures - I wouldn't trust me if I were you

Default The loco section is finished

    Hi All,

Well it's finally come to fruition - the locomotive section of the build is now complete. I added the wheel sanding pipes and fitted the locomotive to the tracks.
One worrying feature is that it is too heavy for Cathie to lift one end. Had to make up a special jig to raise the loco so I could get the rails aligned and the setup and secured. This is a problem as I cannot load it into a van with Cathie as my other lifting person. Something I will need to get my head around.

It has taken 11 months - approximately 1100 hours actual working time and untold hours thinking about the build. 8 trips up to the Railway Museum and their support is incredible. It's all been fantastic fun.

Thanks everyone on the Forum for their support - and Cathie.

Thanks Kevin for your knowledge on all things locomotive.

Thanks Trev for your inspirational phone conversations and methods and techniques you have shown and demonstrated to me great stuff mate.

Well it's onto the design work for the carriage now.

Am going to build my own carriage - a combination of a First Class AA and a First Class / Second Class AB. This carriage will be First class only with 4 carriage compartments that seat 6 to a compartment. Entry to the carriage will have first class seating before getting into the compartments (at each end). It will be First class luxury with leather seats, gold plated luggage racks etc. It will sit behind the back of the 4-6-2 locomotive. The Railway museum have let me look and photograph inside an old AA carriage and inside the old Commissioner's carriage. Woodwork and workmanship is beautiful.

Looking forward to the build - is an understatement. Even the bogeys are going to be a good challenge.

Here are some photos of the finished locomotive.

    Thanks again

    Regards

    Keith

Charlie Boy your work is outstanding my friend.
Every time you start a new build your level of Craftsmanship just seem to move up a notch.
The train is truly wonderful both in it's detail and presentation.
An absolute credit to your talent.

I can hardly wait to see the carriage you'll be building.
It will be amazing I'm sure!.

Your a very talented man and a damn fine one as well!.

Keep the fantastic work coming Charlie!.

    Cheers Mate
    Trev.

Wow, this has come together so well. Don't even think about trading Cathie in for a stronger model, maybe consider some extra Weetbix for her at breakfast time, or a gym membership.
I have been following this build from the sidelines for quite some time, especially after seeing your previous engine at Dave TTC's GTG earlier this year. Your workmanship and attention to detail are outstanding, with excellent colour choices for the various bits and pieces, especially the rails and ballast.
As for the carraige build, I look forward to following your journey with great interest as it all comes together.

Is there a Ford F150 or even F250 on the horizon to transport masterpieces?

Good luck with the build, now get back into the workshop!

    Thanks Alan,

    Your comments are most appreciated.

I reckon the carriage will take 12 to 18 months - there is so much opportunity for detail in the old First Class carriages.

No F150 or F250's on horizon but dare I say it - I like the Hyundai iLoad

    Best Regards

    Keith
