Or... there is another option.... A 3 phase genny.... i could get one for not much more than the energex fee....

Might add to the noise, but i think using the machine will probably be louder.... hehe.

    thoughts?

I live on the cusp of suburbia and have a generator that I use in emergencies, and it is moderately loud. Do you live in suburbia?

It looks similar to mine, except for the 3 phase outlet.

It does a good job, but rattles and should be mounted on blocks to reduce noise. Also the exhaust fumes are copious, and it really should be located outside.

I think you will find you will need more than that gen set to run that machine.

get 3 phase if you are really keen.

I was in your place not long ago, I had 3 phase box at front of my property. local line company charged me $500NZD to make it 3 phase - it was single phase only.

I had to dig a trench thats 600mm deep to save the cost. although I am in NZ, I guess regulation across the ditch is similar. total cable run to the new board is about 30m.

I had no space on the existing board left so I had to buy a new board.

all in all it costed me $5000-$6000 ish.

Once you have 3 phase in your shed it opens up to another world. you get to play with real machines.

    Thanks man,

So the quote is in from the sparky.... Came in at $2k.. :S add this to the $1k that Energex said they will charge me for their end.
Im asking the sparky how i can get it cheaper... ie help him with the work, pay cash etc.

So i know im getting this machine for free, but is it worth $3k to get it?
If it was just a jointer/thicknesser, i would be reluctant, but considering it has a table saw and spindle moulder too muddies the water.

That's what I paid to run a 3P cable to my shed (45m run) and it included wiring my shed (13 GPOs and 5 lights)
I dug the trench for my sparky. Worst job ever through a 100 year old suburban back yard fun of buried rubbish (bricks, broken bottles, even a cast iron bed frame) and I cut my hands removing the glass.

And it may not end there - what have you got for dust extraction?

Combination machine is only the beginning...
You will likely to need a 3 phase dust extractor - depends on the size of your shed and what you do... also you may need a wide belt sander in future? for a WBS you will need 3 phase to get one that you wont complain about if you use it often, and when you have a wide belt sander sander you may need a compressor... the list goes on and on...

if wide belt sander is not your thing, then maybe a 3 phase lathe...

From a woodworking sparkies POV, it all comes back to if intend on ever putting more heavy machinery in your workshop.
Once you have a 3 phase sub board in your shed, to get another 3 phase outlet installed wont break the bank and certainly opens up options when buy machinery, especially second hand stuff.
But if this is only ever going to be the one and only machine, it may simply be not worth the cash outlay.

Thanks for the replies guys... So the plot thickens... Your mention of a dust extractor prompted me to ask about it.... the guy who has so generously offered the machine has also offered a small dust extractor to suit the machine!!

I have actually earnt small amount of money from buying and selling of my 3 phase machines... totally unintentional - I bought a wide belt sander for my workshop and then upgraded to a bigger but still 2nd hand sander, I bought it for $1500 NZD, and then sold for $3000, this is just one example.

you probably have more difficulty in doing this in Australia as you guys are more industrious than us...

Not so easy here. The best bargains are sometime from blokes moving to places with 3P to 1P and don't know about VFDs or consider swapping out motors.
