    Default Monday night Show'n'Tell

Found this on weekend in one of many chapels I frequent regular.
I may have got a little bit to excited and maybe payed a little to much $95 AU
    But the pain is going.
It's in very good condition apart from the saw plate it's quite rusty and inmagine quite pitted.
Will find out in a few weeks hopefully when I get a chance to really look at it.
I did have a quick look Sunday afternoon.
Importantly no breaks or chips in the cast iron base.[emoji106]
    Everything moved which should move[emoji3].
Plus all the screws turn that's a big plus.
Unfortunately I'm not to keen on the saw handle.
But I think I can fix that.
Also just found it was listed on eBay
So I've lifted there pic it's better than mine

And it's a Henry Rossell and Co
    From Sheffield England
So that's a new brand to add to the growing collection.
But I'm not really a collector.
O and I did one very quick test cut just for the hell of it and was quite surprised how accurate it still is

    Cheers Matt

I'm not familiar with that brand. I'm sure you can whip up a more comfortable handle but the blade looks a little short for cutting wider pieces. Some of the saws that came with the Stanley mitre boxes had a small hole in the end of the saw so that you could put a nail (or equivalent) in it. So that if you got a bit enthusiastic on the back stroke you don't end up pulling the saw out if the guides.

    Thanks
    Hiroller
The Stanley mitre box hole is not actually for a nail.
It's for a small cast stop block with a set screw.
But I'm sure quite few have lost them over the years.
A bent nail would certainly work tho.
Next time I'm home I take pic of the stop block on my Stanley mitre saw.

    Cheers Matt

    Matt

That's a pretty good pick up even if the handle on the saw offends us and I know what you mean there: The handle looks particularly bodgey with those square "after market" nuts on the back. I would certainly look at replacing it with something a little more spectacular. I feel sure you could do it justice.

I have always thought that the small hole at the end of the mitre saws was for a nail and indeed to prevent the saw being extracted from the guides on the back strike exactly as Gavin said. However I have never seen one of the stop blocks you mention. Quite possibly a small item such as that has always gone missing (probably in a pile of sawdust). I think I can see a future use for those worn out square cutters from the spiral head thicknessers and jointers .

Although the chances of your mitre box co-habiting with a spiral head thicknesser may be more uncommon than those little mitre saw stop blocks .

Can you see a number on the box anywhere that would indicate which model it is? If there is a model identification it will tell us what size saw was intended for that box. The most likely size will be around 22"/24" with 4" under the back, but they were made in a variety of sizes to suit saws up to 32" long and 6" under the back.

Longer saws will fit easily but the depth is more critical.

    Regards
    Paul

Hi Matt, I think what you have there is an early Stanley 50 1/2 mitre box. Not a top of the line model but one that enjoys the extra feature of slots in the top of the bar guides which enables the use of a hand saw as well as a back saw.

    Are that makes sense.
The only marks I can find are the pattern dates tho.
    Interesting tho,
The base pattern date is different to the plate guides??

Here's a catalog cut of the box. There would have been seperate patents on each of those components rather than just one for the box.

    ...

Actually I can't add a pic at the moment as I now receive a complaint about trying to add a PNG file. In the meantime you find the mitre box on page 33 of the Stanley No 34 Catalog here: http://www.blackburntools.com/articl...1914-no-34.pdf

    Matt

    Pushy? Pushy! Me!!

Nah. I think you have me confused with somebody else.

Gavin seems to be on top of this model. It's not a box with which I am familiar . That may not have reached your page quite as I intended and I am out of "white out."

The 50 1/2 has stumped me as I was expecting a 2246 or similar. In fact Stanley made a large range of mitre boxes over the years with little refinements (sometimes economy measures) that would identify the period to the all knowing.

"White out" and "liquid paper" are the same thing. They both make your computer screen really hard to read.

    Gavin

That Stanley catalogue is a beauty. I'm pretty certain that if you were in a POW camp you would have been the "Scrounger."
