Hi Derek,

The bedroom is the only separate room that I can actually take out of the carriage. The Reception, Conference/Dining, Sitting Room, Back Entrance Room and Toilet are all just separated by partitions and I can work on these walls individually. Then it's a matter of removing the 3.5metre sides and lining them and then securing the room partitions to the sides.

Gee the carriage photo of the real thing makes mine look quite plain Will have to add a lot more detail - however the drapes over the windows will add to mine I think. Thanks for the photo mate

Hi All,

Finished all I can do at this stage in the bedroom. I have made up a linen chest for the end of the bed. I have now placed the bedroom back into the carriage. I have taken a shot from above the bedroom and also what it would look like walking into the bedroom. Now I am going to start work on the Conference/Dining Room.

For a few minutes I actually thought you'd finished the carriage Keith, but yours does look better.....

Where did you get or how did you make the picture frame, very detailed , the coat of arms is awesome too

I bought the picture frame at a $2 shop in Geelong. I thought it had a touch of class to it. It was also the perfect size for the original painting for my scale. Made up the mask for the painting out of cardboard. I pulled the back off and made up a new back and made up dowels to drill into the wall. The original was painted grey. I sanded it and then I used a metallic gold craft acrylic paint. It took 4 coats to ensure it didn't show any of the base colour. I dabbed the paint on to give it a more of a gold effect. I think it came up pretty well. I cheated a bit by buying the original frame. Made the coat of arms frame and glazed it all though

Gee it's been a week since I posted - time goes quick when you are having fun

I have been working on the Conference / Dining Room, plus also doing a bit of research on how I am going to do my lighting - I think I have a plan (maybe)

I have lined the room dividers and then wallpapered in gold wallpaper. I have made up dado walls for both sides of the room. The carriage walls will still need to be lined and maybe papered but considering more wall paneling in mahogany.

I have made the conference / dining table. It is made out of oak. The table edges were done with my router. The top and base of the legs are also oak that I routed and then cut and glued to the main legs to give it a fancier look. The table is stained in mahogany and then has 3 coats of clear gloss.

I am now making up the dining chairs. I have assembled the frames of 3. In all there will be 6 chairs. There is lots of sanding to get them looking OK. I made up a special jig to cut the back frame timbers to get them all the same.
These chairs will be upholstered in red.

At the rate you are going, by years end you will be employed to make furniture on a bigger scale. I thought the apprentices' made models to show off their skills at the end of their time.

The table looks A1. You will have no trouble selling it for big $$. Just don't let on it's a scaled version.

Apprentices' where expected to produce a final piece to gain their full qualifications in their trade none as a "Masterpiece".

Although Charlie is way beyond his apprenticeship it's fair to say we're in the realms of seeing the construction
of a MASTERPIECE!.

Hi All,

Slow work making furniture

Anyway - stained and gave clear gloss coating to the dining chairs. They have come up OK but the stain is a real pain to work with, but any irregularities in coating give it a bit of an antique look so shouldn't complain.

I have researched the Victorian style sofa's and came up with my own modified design. I think it looks a fair bit better than my original sofa I made.
This has real cushions - stuffed with quilting wadding. These are glued to the back main cushion. The feet were turned in the woodlathe.
This sofa is for the main sitting room.

I am going to have blue carpet throughout the carriage except the bedroom which will be red.

Back to the dining / conference room next for more furniture

Don't discard the old sofa Keith, the staff or security staff could use it as seating....it's way too good for the bin sir, so much time, effort, skill to make this carriage more than just a train carriage......Peter
