I think it's just your eyes deceiving you. The longest standard hand saw was 36" which is still less than a metre. The mitre saws look shorter than the hand saws.

Yes ,the longest mitre saws were 32" from all the major manufacturers. This is from the catalogues.

Remember they tend to look bigger because the handle stands off the plate compared to many, but not all, hand saws. Also our mind's eye sees a back saw as small so when confronted with these monsters they seem even larger.

However, there is one area they are as big as it gets and that is weight. They are twice the weight of an equivalent size hand saw primarily because of the steel back.

Some of mine to give some perspective. The largest there is still only 26" (I think).

There were custom orders like this one with 7 1/2" under the spine.

However, I think the ones on display are standard sizes.

    Team

I found a nice Spear and Jackson no 88 mermaid saw on the weekend.

Is there any easy way of finding out how old this one is?

    Cheers Stewart

Default A nice pair of Disstons

Found these at the tip shop today. $5 for the pair. I haven't touched them at all yet and the etch is even visible on the D8 before restoration.

They look like they are a matching pair. I think they are early 20th Century (Pre 1919)

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Peter

Your thumbhole D8 is 1896-1917 (from the medallion) but I can't see the other saw well enough. If it says "Philida" then it is the same. If it says "Phila" then it is the next era 1917 - 1940. However that era can be further split if you can detect the etch. If the "8" is inside the "D" it is pre 1928 but if the model is D-8 it is post 1928.

A very cheap pick up. Those Disston workhorses often clean up very well and are excellent saws.
