i used the uni pro microfibre rollers today and had issues with them falling apart when doing a coat of hammertone, maybe it was just a one off bad roller.

Im going to head into the workshop and give it a another coat once i flip it back up onto its feet.

your right about it being less pronounced with the roller, but its a lot easier to clean up than spraying.

I've been running the new rollers through my fingers a few times lately just to get any loose fibers off before I start, I was getting some bits of lint and crap in my finish otherwise.

I always wash my roller covers prior to first use for that reason, it actually helps pick up the paint if they're not absolutely dry. Amazing what you learn if you read the instructions!

my rollers were breaking down in the middle of the roller, it appears to be a manufacturing issue, as it is only affecting a 10mm area in the middle of the roller.

As for the wetting the roller, yes a damp roller is fine with "Water" based acrylic based paints, but Hammerite and Hammertone as are enamel based paint with a high silicone content, and the instructions on my paint clearly stated not to add any thinners.

Anyhow back to buellers thread, looking forwards to seeing how the the cabinet came out like

Interesting, makes me wonder why they label it Brush Cleaner and Thinner if they tell you not to use thinners I can understand why you wouldn't for hammered finish, but the smooth Hammerite paints benefit from it. If only their thinners didn't cost as much as the paint.

Your right about the cost of thinners, i had to pick up more during the week, at least at the commercial coating shop sells it in 20 ltr drums so it works out quite cheaper than the handyman tins they sell at Bunnings.

I've never brought brush cleaner and thinner, normal general thinners is good enough for me or gun wash, as long as it cleans the gun or brush.

Gun wash is a cheaper option instead of wasting good thinners and normally thats what i use as spraying tends to give a better finish, and i sprayed a lot of 2 pack when i was cabinetmaking, so thats what i'm use to, but my new workshop doesn't have a dedicated spray booth, so ill get back to using danish oil on timber, which i find more enjoyable.

I had issues again today with the microfibre rollers, i managed to strip the centre of the roller with my fingers without a lot of force, so i threw that unipro batch out, so i don't forget about the issue and use them again on something that needs a better finish than a welding table.

Can we look at thinners as drycleaning, as it is a solvent so technically we are drycleaning the roller before using

I actually mentioned the Hammerite stuff as they specifically say you must use their thinner, though I've used xylene with the garage door paint and it worked well. Haven't used tetrachlor so I can't comment on the dry-cleaning

Have you sprayed the Hammerite? I thought about it with my hvlp, but then I saw Earlex reckon you need to thin to 50:50 which made it sound like a waste of time and material.

Still working on the cabinet, remembered I wanted to paint the bottom of it so that took up my time last night. Also realised I'd blocked two of the bolt holes for the jointer with my new chute so I had to cut that out as well. More pics coming tomorrow, putting more paint down after dinner.

Here's where I'm at with paint! Cabinet and all the motor tensioning stuff is done, moved onto the jointer base and rabbeting ledge. Planning on getting really busy with this over the coming long weekend, I think if I really get my head down I can get the tables stripped and painted leaving just fence and some small bits and pieces to finish. The fence is already stripped back to bare metal but I need to give it a bath in some Evaporust before I paint it.

Yesterday was actually a really fun day as well, I spent the morning chatting with Derek Cohen about a litany of things and then went off to the Perth Wood School open day for a look around. Only snapped some photos of the Henry Eckert booth but there was a lot on offer. Very hard not to walk out with a Lie Nielsen 60 1/2 but I held strong, contract extension at work is looking iffy so I might be hunting for jobs again in May [emoji19]

Oh yeah, I'm a sucker for some highly polished brass. Was like a kid in a candy store last weekend!

Been wondering when I'd find some sort of date stamp on this, looks like it's a 1963 vintage! Getting on with stripping the tables down today and will mask them off for paint tonight.

Have painted the fence during the week, just needs one last coat but I'll put that down when I'm doing the tables. Then I need to start painting the fence parts and find somewhere that can convert the motor to delta. If that's no problem I'll likely get the bearings replaced as well.

Gahhh not a happy man. Went out this morning to drop off the motor at the motor rewinders and arrived to find the place locked up tight. Opening hours, who needs em?

So I'm back now and have one more table to mask off and then it's time for paint. More photos to come later today!
