This morning there's a dusting of snow on external deck and the neighbours tell us that 4 years ago the town received something like 1.1 m in a single fall the first weekend in May.

And hugging a tree at speed is definitely not recommended. The last person to do it was taken off the mountain in a box.

Unfortunately the VFD didn't arrive last Thursday or Friday as forecast but it gave me time to start building the new acoustic enclosure which really should have been done first anyway? The old enclosure was inside the shed and worked pretty well but it is too small for the new DC. So, I've started building a new one on the verandah and directly outside the old enclosure.

    image.jpeg image.jpeg
Ive been able to salvage the acoustic door, some of the structure and all of the acoustic batts from the old one to use in the new. One ongoing problem is that the NEW DC won't fit through the OLD acoustic door but it is a simple thing to remove a piece of the acoustic baffling inside the door frame which allows it to pass through with a HUGE 4mm to spare
I'm hoping that the VFD will arrive and can be fitted so that I can locate the DC before I reinstall the door?
Right at the moment the shed is 'offline' until I move either the OLD or NEW DC into the new enclosure which is a decision that I will make on the day.
I will regain a few square metres of floor space inside the shed when the new enclosure is operational and I can't stop that dark portion of my brain from plotting a new 'something' to go into that spot
I built most of my house as an owner builder but I don't remember it hurting as much?

Nah, I'll have to implement a new drinking protocol? To keep things equal, instead of 6 woodies drinking 5 beers each, I'll have to get 5 woodies to drink 6 each?

fletty is the VFD going to be in with the dusty or in the shop where you can turn it on/off and adjust speed etc.?

With the VFD Alan is using the keyboard can be removed and remote mounted using a CAT 5 network cable so it could be in the enclosure and the keypad wherever is convenient.

I didn't know options like that were available. Are the VFD's affected by dust or are they sealed?

    Thanks

They are fan cooled and have cooling vents so it would not be a really good idea to put it in with a bag type of dust extractor. I put mine in with a Clearvue and it survived for quite a few years as their is no dust escape with a cyclone or shouldn't be. The VFD has a annoying whine when operating and I wanted it as far from my hearing as possible.

    Hi Pete,
You must be 'telepathetic'! I was sitting here on the deck having a cup of coffee, SWSBO rushing around getting ready for work and me wondering EXACTLY the same thing? I didn't know any of the info below but I'm thinking now that I might leave the VFD inside with the DC, but in a dust protected enclosure, and have the keyboard on the outside?

Why not widen the door?? That way either sucker can be got in and OUT should the need arise.

More floor space = More bench space or room for that lathe eh Tony it would make the shed more productive Alan

Time you built a seat bench for the drinking porch those chair look far to comfy

The VFDs that are exposed to the most dust in my shed are those at or near the metal grinding/cutting/sanding station. Up until recently I had no metal dust extraction, and even what I have now does not really extract all that well, and these VFDs show a layer of light grey dust even after only a couple of days os regular use. Over a couple of weeks the layer builds up enough so I think they need cleaning - see below.

To reduce the "fall out" of dust into most of my VFDs I have installed some with a sheet metal roof like cover but this doesn't do much because 10 out of 11 VFDs in my shed have fans and they suck dust into themselves. To keep the levels of dust inside the VFDs from building up too much, every month or so I blow the dust out of them with a reduce pressure compressed air line, with those at or near the grinding station getting a blown down on a more regular basis.

The VFD on my MW lathe is located inside an old power tool box at head height on a wall near the lathe. The front panel of the VFD has been removed and is located on the front of the box. That box has a large 12V computer fan inside it to assist the cooling of the VFD. The fan has no filter on it although I have though about adding a coarse filter. This VFD is the oldest VFD (6 years) and by far the cleanest of all the VFDs in my shed. It has never been cleaned. Another reason for this is possibly because it's also further away from the metal grinding station than any of the others. I also use coolant lube on the MW lathe which reduces the levels of metal dust significantly.

The other machine that has an enclosed VFD is a 10" pedestal grinder which has it's VFD inside its base. This has a 240V 4" fan supplying air to the inside of the pedestal - this too is quite clean although it does not get much use.

The VFDs in wood work areas, where wood dust extraction is more effective, eventually still pickup dust. This is most likely because I either forget to turn on the DC or have the gate valves set incorrectly. Often I see more grey MW than wood dust on these VFDs. This is probably because I often leave the VFD on a machine on until I leave the shed. This means the VFD is on with fan running even though I am not running a machine so there is no dust extraction active. The fans in these VFD will thus continue to suck on any any dust, e.g. from outside air coming into the shed, or stuff drifting over from the MW area, until they are turned off.

So far the 11 VFDs in my shed have accumulated 36 years of various levels of dust exposure so I think says something about what they can handle in terms of dust. None of my VFDs make any particularly irritating noises but I will admit that the noise from say 6 VFD fans does add up enough (64dB with 6 VFDs running) to affect the peace so if I want quite I do turn them off.

I would't put a VFD in an enclosure where a DC or cyclone was located. Not because it would not be able to handle the fine dust that escapes from both a DC or cyclone, but just in case there was some sort of accident or leak that led to a major loss of sawdust. Or in the case of the cyclone forgetting to empty to bin. I would not want to be cleaning out a VFD full of sawdust. One possibility would be to put the VFD inside a box that is in the enclosure and use a small fan to drawn air from outside the enclosure.
