After doing some comparisons to photos online it looks like this is indeed an 08s, rather handy as I've just located a 48 page parts list for that model with exploded diagrams.

Dad used to use heavy used engine old from bulldozers and trucks in his old McCullochs and because the stuff was so viscous he used to dilute it down with diesel. This also helped reduce the buildup of sap on the bar and chain.
The used oil was foul stuff and now known to actively cause cancer but he died of a brain embolism.

Well my self imposed spending embargo is over! Had an interview with an IT consulting firm last week and went back today for another with management, they just sent me an email to let me know I'm getting an offer early next week. Actually the most excited I've ever been about a job offer, the people there are bright as hell and they recruit from many different STEM fields so I'll be able to learn so much.
Relieved from a financial perspective too, now I can get back on track with the plans for a table saw and thicknesser before the end of year. Likely in the next month or two if the planets align [emoji2]

Frustrating day but managed to get the cutter installed. That wasn't too much trouble but wound up spending a good hour trying and failing to get the table adjustment handles threaded properly through the outfeed table. Gave up because I cut my hand and was getting really ticked off, going to have another crack tomorrow.
Very happy with the mobile base, even with the tables on its a breeze to move around on the concrete.

I'm not sure how you cut yourself but if I were there I would put a few layers of masking tape on the carbides of the cutter head. One it would lessen the inevitable cut from my hand slipping and bashing a knuckle on them and secondly help protect the edge some it gets hit with some other part of the jointer while putting it together. It'll be a nice machine when you have it all put together.

Yeah that was actually the plan all along but I took the tape out of my tool box and forgot to put it back. Always forget something.

Boring week, not starting new job till next Thursday but I've been stuck in the city waiting on deliveries and my work contract so no progress out at the shop. Instead I've been chipping away at the chainsaw, messy work but it's been really fun learning about all the inner workings on a combustion motor.
Stripped off the air filter, carby, flywheel and oil tank and today I worked on getting the clutch off. Needed a $60 removal tool so I decided to make one myself, cost me about $5 for some M4 screws and an M8 high tensile nut and bolt. Cut out two scrap pieces of jarrah and then drilled out the centre for the shaft. Then I marked out the M4 hole locations by painting the relevant areas on the clutch with a white marker and pressing the jarrah pieces into it. Drilled out those and then chiselled out an area for the M8 nut to fit into. The nut was a tight fit but I then drilled out a piece of 1.5mm mild steel just to fit over the top and keep it located. Worked a treat!
Carby is completely disassembled, just need to degrease and clean all the parts and then I'll be putting in a new carby kit which arrived a few days ago.

Cheers mate, funny what lengths I'll go to in order to save a buck. Puts a smile on my face when it works though!

Jointer got delayed again this weekend but for good reason, had to make a trip out to Leschenault 😊
The guy had a good laugh at me rocking up in such a massive truck but having a hydraulic lift made what is usually a back breaking job a total breeze. Machine appears to be in good nick overall, pretty sure the bloke was just a hobbyist so its just got some light surface rust and otherwise should clean up nicely. Paid $950 for it which I'm pretty happy with, wish it had cast iron infeed/outfeed tables but considering this is the first reasonably priced machine I've seen in 6 months I'll take what I can get.
Going to chat with Rob at Wizard tomorrow and see what the damage will be to convert to helical, will likely upgrade later this year after I've bought a good table saw.

Good score - Not as old school as your usual machines - it will look out of place - you might have to give it a hammer finish in a dark grey or similar?

Haha yeah I was thinking the same, it's my youngest machine by a long stretch but for the price I couldn't pass it up. Probably just wind up giving it a clean up to get rid of rust and lubricate everything, really just want to start making some dust so want it up and running as soon as possible.
Its all coming together, good feeling knowing I can abandon dressed timber from Bunnings soon. The high cost for such poor quality has really put me off doing any projects the last few months and I've got about ten different projects I want to build.

It seems Rob Gregory at Wizard has my disease and doesn't sleep. Just got a reply to my query at 11PM EST on a Sunday night!
Upgrade comes to $1145 for the CTS and $1530 for the Byrd. Probably go with the CTS again, from what I hear the finish quality between the two would be hard to pick apart.

Oh how I love new tool day 😊
Finally getting all the tooling so I can use the lathe, imported some Crown Cryo tools and a Tormek bench grinding kit from Axminster. The few unhandled ones are actually from Timbecon, they were clearing them out for $25 each so I couldn't pass them up. Going to replace the handles on the others anyway as they're quite short.
Got a lot of work on reassembling the jointer and cleaning up the thickie but hopefully I can put them to use soon. Still need to sort out a grinder for sharpening but as soon as Timberbits has more of the Vicmarc slow speed grinders in stock I'll order one with a 180g CBN wheel and then I'll have everything I need.
