    A kit of parts.
Are you sure you did not work for "Airfix" or "Revell" or any other kit manufacturer?

I bet you can not wait to put it back together again.

Fletty (wants a picture) and All,

I have made up a fixture for my toolpost on the metal lathe. I have made it so the ink pen can slide in and out to compensate for any off centre of the boiler between centres. The beauty of the toolpost is that the longslide adjustment is graduated so I can get the width of the pinstripes the same width. I will get a photo of the setup and post a picture. Still a few coats of paint to go on the boiler.

Kevin - YES definitely looking forward to having it back together, but this stuff is enjoyable (Pinstriping etc) as I have never done it before and it is a BIG learning curve. (I worked for BHP / OneSteel in my working life - would have been good at Airfix or Revell though)

    Thanks for your interest.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

Another couple of coats on the boiler today.

Also worked on the front bogie wheel guards. The prototype Stirling has some fancy pinstriping on these guards.

I made up a fixture for each of my guards and then marked on the fixture where my centre points were for each radius. I then painted the guard the green and brown livery. I then used a compass (I reckon you need a good one with screw adjustable calipers - like we used in Technical Drawing many years ago - allows minimum adjustment to get the different width of pinstripe line you want) with the acrylic paint pen inserted. Then did my radius pinstripes.
The paint in these pens dry really quickly so there is no issue running the white next to the black.

Below are photos of the guard being pinstriped.

Should be able to pinstripe the boiler tomorrow - unless Cathie want to go for a drive

    Regards

    Keith

Excellent work Keith, the old drafting compass comes in very handy along with engineering skills of a clever craftsman....

    Hi all,

Too wet to go for a drive so worked on the boiler pinstriping.

I had made up a wooden attachment for my metal lathe toolpost with a hole that is a sliding fit for the paint pen. Marked up the stripe positions along the boiler.
Inserted the black pen and Cathie slowly rotated the boiler by hand. I moved the pen in and out to compensate for the slight out of round on rotation. Did the black and then lined each side with the white paint pen. The paint pens don't work as well in the horizontal position because the paint is not gravity feeding. Had to remove pens frequently - clean tip - and shake up to encourage ink flow. Pretty frustrating. To finish off I had to redo some spots by hand - but I am very happy with the outcome. Have given the steam shroud about 10 light coat of "Super Gold" spray paint. Can only use Very, Very light coat as this paint "loves" to run.

    Regards

    Keith

Thumbs up Pen striping would put me in the lunny ben for sure. lol

This is where my nerves would give out on me, being afraid of buggering it up after all this beautiful work.
Plus my hands are so shaky.
    More power to you!!!

The great thing about paint is that it can be removed and redone

That said, though I get there in the end, painting is definitely NOT my strong point.

Agree guys - painting is a scary thing, but as Steve said it can be removed and painted over.

These paint pens are a tremendous invention.

I originally started trials masking up and painting HORRID and so frustrating.

Pulling the chasis apart now - ready for it's painting

Just the lighting and my camera Peter. It is a true Brunswick Green (very similar to British Racing Green) - I had the lights on in the shed - overcast and wet outside today.

Maybe yesterday's photo has a better indication of the green.

Same paint (I'm not a real good photographer)

The paint pen is mightier than the brush.

Thumbs up Did I tell a lie!!!

The pen IS mightier,, ITS THE TRUTHHHHH!!!
I've watch videos of them pen striping motor cycles and it really looks outstanding but you've got to have one steady hand for this type of work.
I know it will come out great and can't wait to see it.
