I remember when I first saw Maloof's work in an article in an early FWW - I was deeply impressed, it was fresh and different, but had good lines, whereas a lot of the other new furniture at the time was just plain fugly, imo. If I recall correctly, Sam was a graphic artist by training (yes he was, I just checked with Mr. Google), which goes some way to explaining his good eye, but I think you have to be born with the flair to be a true artist. Which is why I'll always be a copycat!

    Cheers,

I've been pretty keen over the past day to blend in the rear of the arms into the legs. So before heading out today, I spent 30 minutes with the grinder removing material.

The goal was to remove enough material so I can draw on some curves then use a die grinder and rasps to shape to my lines.

Default WIP - Maloof inspired rocker

Over the past few days I've worked on the arms. I mostly used both the die grinder and rotary sander to get close to the shape I was after, then used hand tools to refine the shape.

I'll leave it as is until the final sanding/scraping of the chair. Sanding will likely remove the crisp hard lines, so I'll refine the lines at the end of the build before finishing.

I created an indent that runs from the inside of the arm and goes up the leg. I wasn't sure if I was going to add this detail but after looking at it without it, it looked too boring. I'm happy I ended up going with it.

I tell ya what, this chair build is probably the worst thing I could build for my personality type. I'm an obsessive perfectionist who fusses over the small details. This chair is full of these, so it's becoming quite the enjoyable challenge!

Default WIP - Maloof inspired rocker

    Thanks for the comments.

Next up is finishing the back slats. Man these are a lot of work! The shaping is easy, but fitting them is a little tricky. Once these are done and glued in I can start sculpting all the transitions and start sanding the chair.
Then it's just the rockers which are pretty straight forward, the bent lamination form is almost complete but I'll wait until the chair is done before I glue up the laminations.

I'm hoping to have the rocker done by Christmas..... we'll see how that goes.

There is a very nice build here, with enormous detail, it appears. Similar tools and method. I've not looked at all, but it is laid out well and the result is superb. I've linked to it for inspiration and final detailing.

    Hi Derek,

I've been following his build since he started and he has done a great job. The maple he used was out of his world! I initially wasn't a fan of the mission brown dye he used during the finishing process, but the last few pics he posted has me warming to it.

I got 4 of the 7 back slats roughly shaped yesterday. I still need to individually fit them to the chair by shaping the tenons but I'm happy where they're at now.

First step is to slightly round over the front. I draw a reference line a few mm on the edge and use the centre line and the reference line as my guide.

The result after both sides have been done.

The back of the slats also get a round over, but this one goes from the centre line all the way down to the reference line.

All 7 back slats are now shaped. I'll now move onto fitting the remainder of the tenons into the 1/2" holes in the chair. The area just above the tenons will be sculpted/blended in for a nice transition.

The top section of the slats will be cut to size and receive a 3/8" tenon. These will be a lot less fussy then the lower tenons.

I finally feel like I'm making some serious progress!
