what the photos don't show is that I cut an oval hole in the shelf for the handles to fit snugly in. Essentially so the wouldn't rattle when opening and closing the doors

There are a number of "solution styles" for saw storage carefully detailed here.
I am finding less & less need to think about hand saws these days, but that in itself presents another problem.
I am Queensland based (Gold Coast) & due to space limitations I have mounted about half a doz saws against a backing board in my shed.
What surprises me is the rate of corrosion that ensues, far worse on the side against the backing board.
My response is: wipe over with phosphoric acid & then coat with lanolin, which is these days readily available in a spray.
Of course that means before & after use there is some extra work.
I do much the same with my planes & chisels.
If I had a "cupboard", with many saws stored as in several of the pics shown in this post; I would definitely add a Kg or so of desicant to keep the moisture of the air down.

I find that just having my tools in a cabinet the rust problem is reduced. My lathe accessories are on a board without any covering and I find that I am constantly cleaning and re-protecting them, whereas the ones in cabinets just sit there after applying a small amount of inhibitor of some sort to them.
