SWMBO's horse - not again!
Last year SWMBO gave up horse jumping as she had come off a couple of times, without really injuring herself probably because she was wearing a body protector (a sort of a flak jacket/vest). Instead of jumping and cross country SWMBO decided to stick to flat track work and to to give the horse something mentally stimulating to do, earlier this year she started Horse agility (like dog agility). All has been going fine up until the end of an event today when her horse bucked her off and she landed on a low fence on her right side and cracked 4 ribs plus a seriously sprained wrist. Now if she had had the body protector on she probably would not have broken the ribs. Currently she is in hospital with suspected internal bleeding that is being explored.
My next few weeks are not sounding too productive as I'll need to be at beck and call and its seriously going to impact on my shed time.
The last thing I said to her this morning was "Stay safe", shoulda said "break a leg"!

Wish her a speedy recovery from all forum members and I bet she wears that jacket next time.

Ouch! That is going to hurt in more ways than one. Every time she breathes she will be reminded of the accident for quite some time. If the wrist injury is on her dominant hand there will be even more reminders.
Hope the recovery is rapid.

From what I've seen horse injuries seem to be worse than ladders and horses go about injuring themselves as well. Is there a rule anybody over 50 shouldn't climb horses?
Wish her a speedy recovery from me!Franklin

Gees Bob, that news is not good. Cracked ribs take a while to come good (I cracked 2 ribs that took 6 weeks to be pain free) I do hope she is on the mend quickly. I wonder whether she needs to look at her horse activities and safety. All the best to you both
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

If there's one thing SWMBO is not, it's being careless. She's a good planner, takes her time, a careful driver, careful towing the horse float, safety conscious around the house, super conscious around horses, normally able to handle difficult horses etc. Most of the horse incidents have been cause by idiots riding motor bikes too close to horses or while riding a difficult horses and because of this last year she bought a placid well behaved horse but even good horses can get spooked and be unpredictable.
My limited understanding is that horses need to be ridden regularly to remind them how to behave and maintain the pack/leader relationship. The problem with SWMBO's horse has been it has had sore feet so has not been ridden for a few weeks and then only last week did it get ridden. SWMBO said that the horse was extra frisky and rode it on Thursday and Friday to get some beans out of it.
On the Saturday, the day before she came off, she was leading her horse along a long row of parked floats when she came across another rider whipping a horse to try and get it to move. SWMBO's horse does not like whips and took off. before it could be ridden and it performed really well. Then yesterday something spooked the horse right at the end of a successful ride and it bucked - apparently it has only ever bucked a couple of times in the year she has had this horse - this time she was not ready and - plop!
There are experienced riders competing in their 70's and SWMBO has been riding for 16 years so it's not like she's a novice but there comes a time to everyone when they has to consider if they can really keep going.

Sounds a bit like me on the ladder. I've been climbing ladders since before I was 16 and there are experienced climbers using ladders over 70. Technically I also didn't fall off my ladder, my application of the safety equipment was misconfigured and the safety equipment knocked over the ladder I was standing on.
It's really just a matter of perspective and how well we bounce!Franklin

One difference is, unlike a horse, a ladder cannot chuck the user off the ladder

So Bob - no jokes from you for a few weeks. Laughter is cruel in her situation. Hope she heals quickly

Sorry to hear that mate, hoping she’s on the mend quickly and it’s nothing too serious.

Best wishes to your missus, BobL.
Trust the tests for internal bleeding come up negative.
I suppose that going forward the priorities might be
1. Don't make SWMBO laugh
2. find someone to exercise the equine
3. really practice your cooking -- it needs to be OK edible but not better than SWMBO's
4. "visit" the men's shed more often -- park the car round the corner and then sneak back into yoursregards from Alberta, Canada

However, SWMBO does bake and preserve from time to time.
I've always attempted to go the "slightly burnt, overspiced, weird ingredient combo" mix so she can't just expect me to take over completely.

Hope the missus mends fast. You too Fuzzie.
Unfortunately as we age when we have a fall whether it be from a ladder, horse or just tripping over our own feet, we do not bounce up as we once did. Broken bones are more likely and mending takes longer.
Take care out there.

Well, they let her go home this evening and she is actually feeling pretty chipper.
So far the only nursing I've done is make a cup of coffee.
