Will you be making it up like this for the barrel Keith, then turning to the required shape inside and out then adding the ends and banding afterwards

maybe everyone can have a go and turn it into a seudo/side competition of barrel turning as a spare for Keith and he can pick the winner. Hahahaha

Keith, and others who may be interested, I found this barrel stave plan. Good luck.

    Hi All,

Thanks Derek and Fumbler and good suggestion Dave.

I am well into the barrel.

    Cheated quite a bit.

Turned the shape out of laminated pine (as per my previous post)

Had to make up a special fixture to gauge my staves. I ruled a line for each of the staves and then used my dremel with a re-inforced cutting disc and cut the stave edges 5 - 10mm deep.

I then machined up the barrel to take the "steel" bands".

I the filled the stave edges with bodyfiller and recessed the bodyfiller by 2mm to highlight the stave edges. I then did lots of sanding.

Then used PVC strip as my metal bands and araldited into position.

    Coming up OK.

Should have a photo to post today.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi all,

Here are the photos of my "wine barrel" water tank that will be used on the tender of the Rocket.

I did a lot of the work with the barrel between centres on my wood lathe as it was too heavy and awkward to manipulate. The cutting of the staves, bodyfilling, sanding and painting with primer was all done between centres.

The next step will be making up the filler cap top on the upper section of the water tank.

Thanks for everyone's interest and suggestions on this aspect of my build - most appreciated

    Regards

    Keith

It would be fun .... I should spend a bit of time on the lathe

Now theoretically it should be flat facets?

Looks great. Just needs a bit of chain and perhaps paint and it could be complete.
Are you and Cathy going to add a Mr. Stephenson and assistant?

    Thanks Kevin,

Probably not about Mr Stephenson, but could put Mr Trevithick's engineer from the Peny-Darren in the driver's position at some stage.

Not only is it an excellent image I also like the buildings in the background, just need to remove Pegasus and associated internal combustion vehicles and the power poles and wiring.

I think you and Cathy will need to make a couple of assistants to complete the engine.

    Hi All,

Had a real concern about the machining marks on the ends of my "wine barrel" water tank. I had tied hand sanding them out but to no avail (see arrow in first photo)
I then used a sanding pad in my pedestal drill (but only at slow speed - fast speed creates it's own sanding marks). Then hand sanded and redid the "end boards" of the barrel using a small chisel, needle files and sand paper.
Final result in the third photo.
Thanks Bruce for your input and suggestions - most appreciated

    Regards

    Keith

Ever one step closer to the strip down ready for paint. I think I am probably 1 of a thousand eagerly waiting the final painted product. Looking great.

ps. I usually find the sanding marks when it's all done and polished up.

Looks much better and that sanding disk worked out just right. [Just the right size]
