Which Smartphone?
Time to change from my trusty Nokia 6110 which has given me 11 years of Yeoman service.
I think I'm at the point where I refuse to buy anything Apple because of their business practices. Furthermore they are expensive to start with and have enforced replacement within a few short years.
Samsung have badly damaged the trust in its brand.
Very important to me is clear sound receiving calls, but also a clear microphone, and I have received too many calls from Android owners where they sound like a fart in a phone box. I want to sound like a fart in a music studio, thank you very much. Complete with Sub-woof
Quick search shows these Nokias:

The 7 Plus looks like the go there, for $649
What are your experiences?

Just gone back to my samsung S5 after using a work iphone 6 for a couple of years.....as much as i hate apple and itunes etc damn it was a good phone. I'm no expert but the iphones appear to be the standard for the minor role of making and receiving calls.
I can recommend aldi mobile ! Half what telstra charge for exactly the same thing.

Those Nokia phones you listed are Android phones. The other option is a Windows phone, which I wouldn't touch if you can even still get them. Also not a fan of iPhones.
I will be upgrading the Samsung next year. Great phones. When you talk to me it is 9/10 times via a bluetooth headset or car connection which downgrades the sound quality.
Be aware, although brand has some consideration in the price, with phones you get what you pay for. You can get a 'good on paper' smart phone from China ridiculously cheap but they have heaps of problems and bugs and it's not worth it in the long run. The last Nokia smart phone I had (work phone) was an absolute POS. The difference in price is in the quality of the individual components and the advanced features (that probably hardly anyone uses). Lady Archer's phone has a 4k screen. But she wanted that phone and it was the only option for that model. I can't for the life of me think of a use for a 4k, 5 inch screen but it sucks more power than a standard screen. Battery use is another consideration. Some of the cheaper phones have a small battery capacity and go flat quickly. Those were the droids I was looking for.

If I was to change from my iPhone, I would be tempted by an Oppo. Really impressed with the Oppo DVD player I bought.

No matter what mobile you buy it's unlikely you'll get that sort of life time from any mobile these days.
Because they all are much more internet/network integrated, even with constant patching and software updates all mobiles these days go out of date in terms of security which is another reason to change movies more often than in the past. My son who works in IT security reckons mobile hackers have only really got started and these days any mobile older than 2-3 years represents an IT security risk.

Yes, the microphone in iPhone seems to be very clear.
Samsungs are Androids too aren't they? I thought anything non-iThing was Android?
Yebbut even when I know you are not using Bluetooth......you're in that phonebox......I've mainly noticed is with Samsungs. Their microphones seem to be crap.
Yes, I have an Oppo DVD too. My son has an Oppo phone from a few years ago when they first started, and it was crazy cheap. His microphone is also crap.
The mike on my Nokia 6110 is excellent. This item does it's primary function very well indeed.......always has. Assessing mikes is difficult for owners because they never hear themselves. The only way is to know what phone someone else is using.
Apple hardware (on any platform) is excellent - always has been. However, I point blank refuse to be bashed into buying a new phone when they think I should. I was appalled when fletty told me how his phone now gets so hot in his pocket the he has to take it out - it's the Apple bloody mongrel bastards updating the software to turn the screen on to deliberately use up the battery to wear it out so he has to buy a new phone. An act of complete and utter corporate bastardry if ever there was one.

I do not have a reason to upgrade my phone. I keep these things for as long as they are working. The quality of Apple products is generally first rate, which is why I have them. Generally, they are reliable.
Having said this, I must admit that I have not looked into the politics of manufacture. Aren't they all built in China these days?

Ok, but they aren't going to tell you when they drop in the "New improved Battery Eater" software are they? I mean, it took a court case to out them in the first place. You would also miss out on other software updates which can of course be critical for continued security.
Can't reward bad behaviour.
Yes I think all phones are made in China now.

Apple products are multi-origin. Very interesting article from MacWorld UK here:

Hi Brett
I NEVER update when software comes out. I wait for the reviews and feedback. If there are any problems, I hold back until the software has been updated enough to be sorted out. This is not a problem with Mac/Apple alone - all the systems have experienced problems. It makes you wonder why they rush software out when it is still essentially in beta form - we are expected to be their testers?

I have a 5s. Still going strong. Had a hiccup with searching for a carrier on Saturday. Went to my Apple store. Fixed it for free ( firmware issue). Hooks seamlessly to my Windows PC, TV Stereo etc. Had a Nokia before that.
BTW I thought the court case was about Apple slowing down internal speeds as the battery aged - not about causing it to chew batteries.
