    Someone else wrote that, quoting what you said to them. You're not the author, they are. Perhaps there is lost context that we don't know like "I'll save your site and figure out where to get it published", but it's not that important. It would make more sense, though, about requesting deletion. In terms of the poster saying something inaccurate? They have no incentive to.

    We're left guessing that you're dissatisfied with the outcome (or your send off wouldn't have been so abrupt and included "too many reasons to list"). Hopefully the folks who spent time writing content can take their articles and play in another sandbox with them.

    The original point in this thread of mine was, a site comes and goes, it really doesn't matter - don't get caught up fretting over what's gone instead of appreciating what is. I miss the rose antique tools collection of documents, I appreciated some things from your site, but apparently not enough to save (same with rose's old tool catalogs - I can say I wish I'd have saved more of her catalogs, but if they were that important, I would've).

    The demonstration of lashing out at Derek is what I meant regarding the odd vibe. We all have our quirks. Derek generally isn't a taker of the low road, so when we see that, it stands out. Stewie drops tacks wherever Derek will step next (presumably, there will be objection to that), and Charlie Stanford and Larry Williams come to mind doing the same - it's not a crowd you want to hang with.

    DW; take a couple of deep breaths and settle down. If Wiktor wants to close down his internet site, that's his prerogative, he is the owner and originator of that internet site. The personal spat between Wiktor and Derek is for them alone to sort out. Your digging in and taking on the role as Derek's personal attack dog is serving little purpose other than prolonging a thread that should have been killed off well before now by the moderators of this site.

    regards Stewie;

    I'm not anybody's anything, Stewie - certainly nobody's personal attack dog - nor am i excited. Just have noticed that Derek is sort of like a diode - the current of smarm seems to flow toward him, but it never from him. Maybe he's a capacitor, too - he absorbs a lot of it before he releases anything.

    If someone told me that they got a lightning strike from Larry, I'd not be surprised. That's how I got introduced to Larry - an angry drive by (didn't even know who he was) when I posted about a positive experience with a low-cost japanese plane.

    But, not Derek. It really isn't a big deal, Stewie (just like sites coming and going isn't). It's part of the landscape - something that just is. You can't post as much information (no matter how positive and helpful) as Derek has without drawing unreasonable ire from someone.

    I could have the wrong read on Wiktor, too, clouded by other peoples' perceptions - that's a chance we take in life, being wrong. I even had the wrong first impression of George. It's all water under the bridge, just like closing a site - no reason to get excited after the fact.

    Here is a screenshot of the home page for WKFineTools, via the Wayback Machine, for 19th November 2005 - 13 years ago. The website had been going a while by then.

    Top left corner: There only two contributors listed with bylines, myself and The Old Millrat (James Thomson). No Schwarz, no Smalser. They came later.

    Regards from Perth

    I'd be interested in whether or not Wiktor could confirm my suspicions that he was really looking for more out of the website (i.e., more money) and it didn't pan out.

    I don't expect to get an honest answer, so I have no idea how I could tell whether or not that's true - but my suspicion as stated above wiktor leaves an impression that he feels he was owed something for the website that he didn't get. I used to work with a lot of small business owners. The sentiment is similar, and they are often similarly defensive, or more specifically have a "good side" and a "bad side". If they suspect that you don't believe everything they say (including justifications and inconsistencies), they can be explosive and hard to deal with.

    If anyone is on the internet making a giant website and they're not retired and funded by a pension, I'd imagine 99 times out of a hundred, they're trying to get a following so that they can turn the site into an income generator, and most don't pan out because...well, most of the stuff is free on the internet.
