Kumiko workshop with Des King in Melbourne
For a little while, I have been keen to learn Kumiko inspired by Mike Pekovich and Matt Kenney @ Fine Woodworking magazine. Infact, Matt Kenney is in Oz at the moment at Wooddust teaching Kumiko courses. They both look up to Des King as Kumiko master outside Japan.
Des King is teaching a beginner's Kumiko class in Melbourne on Sat 1st and Sun 2nd December. I am going to it, thought there might be others interested too.
Details are at: Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking | Classes: Kumiko Workshop
While there also checkout Rorkee Chair (from Chris Schwarz's campaign furniture book) course too. This is a blast!

I would definitely be tempted if I was not already over-committed that weekend and pretty much busy from Melbourne Cup day to Australia Day. They don't call it the Silly Season for nothing.
I'm doing my May Challenge - I may or may not give a #*c&

I am really looking forward to it. Thinking of making jigs for it (from Mike Pekovich's article in fine woodworking Jan/Feb 2017) and acquiring some saws (Timbecon has 15% off on Japanese saws atm) to take to the class.

Thanks for the heads up. I booked myself in. Really looking forward to it. I'm assuming all tools provided for the day. Don't want to carry too much over with me from Adelaide but could pack a few paring chisels or something i suppose.

All tools are provided. If you are bringing your Kamon-Kiyohisas chisels then it won't hurt . There are a few Japanese chisels around in different people's private collection, would be good to compare.
I am looking at making my own jigs for different angle cuts tho so I can play around with this at home. I will let you know if interested.
Looking forward to it. Less than two weeks to go...

Day Two - Sunday
Making As-no-ha pattern. There are 3 pieces 1) Diagonal piece 2) Two side pieces 3) Small locking piece.
Appologies that I have not taken more shots as I was juggling to finish my Roorkee chair (additional session for students who didn't completethe chair in the original class) next door. Good news Roorkee chair is finished, bad news Kumiko is not but remaining work is straight forward.
