    Default Modifying Bar Clamps

    Hey Guys,
I have four bar clamps like in the pic, I have never liked the handle, I find it awkward to do up quickly.
This has become more of an issue since for the next few months I have limited use and no feeling or sensitivity in the index and middle fingers on my left hand - luckily I'm right handed.

I have thought (for a while, before I hurt my fingers) of changing the clamps. I'm thinking remove the tommy bar arrangement and fit a nut so I can use a socket - my thoughts is just drill the nut and clamp and fit the nut using a roll pin which makes it easy to return to original should the need arise.
    Has anyone done this?
    Cheers

An alternative would be to get a socket which fits over the thread bar, and cut/grind slots to slip over the tommy bar.
That way you're not modifying the clamp, and SuperCheapAuto have individual sockets for 50c at the moment.

The only downside I can see to that is that the tommy bar will be flapping all over the place as you turn the screw, and will snag on the workbench and generally get in the way.

The tommy bar looks short enough to allow affixing it to the thread bar with hot-melt glue at its midpoint. It should then clear the bench and not flop around. I'd apply a masking tape shell first to facilitate melting the glue for restoration.

I have similar set up but as panel c,amps. Mine are home built. I have nuts on the end of my threaded bars. I run it up with my impact gun then tighten with a socket and ratchet. I have no tommy bars

You can place the clamps so the handles overhang the table/bench edge or set them up on a couple of bits of wood to get clearance to spin the handle. No real fix required.

I've used the roll pin idea to join drive elements before. As long as you won't be using really excessive force it works well.

I've not tried it, but it should work. I assume the roll pin will go through the tommy bar hole? Neat idea.
