Bandsaw Blades
I'm new to milling. I bought a Norwood HD36 with 3 spare blades for $150 each (Woodmaster B) Is there a cost effective blade supplier in Australia? Or any U.S. suppliers that ship to Australia? I did get a quote from a company in QLD for $120 + gst but seems expensive compared to what people in the U.S pay for blades. I'm milling all hardwood based in Tasmania. Thanks in advance.

Henry Bros Saws - Bandsaw blades & circular saw blades are an oft-recommended place here. They will do everything you need.
I'd also do the maths on what a US company comparison price would be. Watch postage/freight costs/options, and you should also recognise that in the US there are a lot more people in this game and therefore more demand, where in our little backwater we're largely forgotten, and therefore demand will never drive prices down.....

Can I butt in on this thread to ask about Henry Bros? One thing I've wondered about them is what saw blades you're actually getting. If you look at US sites they're generally sold as branded items and can be compared on that basis, but that seems to be less the case here..?

Hi Ben. Regarding Henry Bros I suggest you look at their website all the details are there . There have been many posts on this company and I have not seen one complaint. I ordered three blades recently from them an they were delivered here in Brisbane two days later. Great service. Cheers Brian.

All their brands are listed on the footer of the web page(s). They aren't an online retailer, jump on the phone and you'll get great answers from them, and they'll tell you what stcok a particular band size would come from. There are "HBS" ones listed which are their own brand - but otherwise it'll be a case by case basis, could depend on what they have. Is there something you're specifically after or are you just wondering what they supply? Edit: also remember, they are building to order - there's no stock of 2940mm blades sitting in stock - hence why it's somewhat unimportant about the manufacturer. You'd always be going back to Henry Bros if there was an issue….

No worries, thanks. There's not something I'm specifically after at this stage, but I suppose where I'm coming from is that not having done any significant training in woodworking, machine setup or anything else related, all of my information comes from books, forums and YouTube D
If you have a look at forums and reviews overseas, people have very strong feelings about brands of blades they prefer for various tasks, which makes sense to me if you consider the options there are for metal composition, tooth geometry etc etc. I don't don't anyone's credibility in suggesting Henry Bros; I'm just trying to acquire information for the reasons mentioned above.
By the way, if they make up a custom size, isn't it still going to be from whichever manufacturer's stock they buy?

absolutely, that's why I said it's still going to be them that you deal with if there's an issue..... and if you buy a 2940mm 1.3tpi TCT blade and I buy one two months later, we may get different suppliers blade, but if either/both of us had a problem we'd talk to HBS....
I suspect that for bandsaws what you mean by books/forums/YT is that you've heard that Resaw-King are the bees knees, and you want one of them. Yeah, just buy one from HBS and you'll be happy

For my sawmill and for my 20" vertical bandsaw I've been ordering Lenox bi-metal blades from Henry Bros. I order Lennox Woodmaster B, and I get Lenox Woodmaster B, made in USA, presumably welded in Aus. Cost is AUD$112 + GST for a 144" x 1 1/4" 1tpi blade. These blades are the best that I have found to date. I've been using them for wet and dry eucalypts and they cut well and last well, and give a good finish. For more information, see: https://www.lenoxtools.com/pages/woo...des.aspx#ltImg[mixed]/2/
Henry Bros have been great. They give good advice on the phone, and make and ship the blades promptly. I usually get the blades 3 or 4 days after ordering.
Unfortunately Henry Bros cannot sharpen the 1 1/4 blades they only go down to 2" or something, so I'm making my own automatic sharpener.
Yes, the info on the Henry Bros, and on the Lenox site is sparse, for example they don't give the hook angle for the Woodmaster B. But for what it's worth I've measured the ones I've been getting at 9 Degrees.
Graham.

Thanks for the replies. Seems Henry Bros is the go to buy blades in Australia. It's frustrating we have such a small market here. Blades here seem to be around the $125 mark for me. If I was in the US they would be around $25 with a dozen companies brands to choose from.

US$25 for a 144" bi-metal blade? Where have you seen that?
I've seen US$89 for a std bi-metal, or US$130 for a premium blade. Cheap carbon steel blades are typically US$25 ish in a pack of 10, but not bi-metal ones.
If you apply the exchange rate, plus an allowance for the import costs of the raw blade stock, then the AUD$112 we pay here seems pretty good to me.
Graham.

Another thing to note is the timber in the US is way softer (and less taxing on blades) than the timber we mill here, a cheap $25 blade won’t last you very long at all and the cost of that $25 blade will blow out way past a single bi-metal blade.

When you say they last well, would you get a days cutting (8 hours) before they need to be sharpened?

Daniel, exactly as Graham as typed here. All those fancy blades you read about will not cut the mustard on our timber. As for your question on how many hours it will last? Too many variables. You only have to find an embedded stone and it will blunted, but I have hit many nails and cut through a 10mm bolt with mine and got a few more hours. I can cut for about 2, 8 hour days and it keeps cutting, but it starts to wander after that.
I get my Lenox Woodmaster B's from either Henry Bros or CSK in Brissie.
Rgds,
Crocy.
