Well the end has come for the tenor ukulele, finished! Even though I was really under the weather over the weekend with a bug of some sort, I had to make the effort to get in the shed and get this one completed. I will endeavour to get a short video of its sound in the near future, but for now here is how it looks.

Thanks John a Euge, I’m on to the other two baritones now. They shouldn’t be far away now.

I guess your following instruments will be faster to build now that you have tooled up and have the experience.
Admitedly, I'm full of admiration for you and your work Cal! I play an acoustic guitar now, enjoying the resonant sound and feel of them ... but a ukulele? Maybe one day. You may have told me, that your Ukulele is a gift for a daughter? She will love it
Cheers, Euge

Slightly faster, but as you know anything hand made is time consuming. Good thing I enjoy it. I won’t be in the shed for a few weeks now as I have family commitments taking up my time. Yes all of the current builds are for my children and one for me.

A bit of a side step, milled some weeping cherry today into some nice quarter sawn boards.
Should make for some nice sides and backs!

Weeping Cherry?
Are you referring to our native tree "Cherry Ballart" (Exocarpus cupressiformis) Cal? The wood pictured looks like it - pale pinkish-brown, fine texture and medium weight. Good choice and should make nice instrument wood quartersawn
Great pics you take. What camera are you using?
Euge
EDIT: on looking at the bark (from what little I can see) it looks like a REAL Cherry, A Prunus spp from a standard straight stem. Also good & pretty

More ukuleles on the bench
As far as I know it’s a real Cherry of the weeping variety. Here is a pic of the top. I picked it up from an arborist that I know.
All branches head outward not upward
I’m just using a phone, but 20 years as a photographer helps a little too [emoji1]

Yes Cal , it is a REAL Cherry an ornamental going by the bark ... and probably a grafted variety so a nice straight stem to mill is better than the twisted sprawling logs of most fruiting cherries.( I used to pick cherries (in Orange) as a kid so have clambered and climbed many to pick their fruit .)
Your 20 years as a photographer shows even with a phone camera.

Thanks Euge, I certainly have never seen a Cherry this large before and probably never again. I just hope that I can dry it all without it turning nasty. It’s all stickered and stacked and sitting open at the moment to help loose as much trapped moisture as possible for a few days. Then I will slow it down a bit with a tarp and tin over it, open at the ends for air flow.

Well I managed to get back to the ukuleles, a bit of time has passed since I have been able to continue working on them.
I finished working on my router stand, I made a bush on the lathe to go under the router base that rides on the top surface of the ukulele. I added some dumbbell weights to the pantograph to act against the springs to push the router to the top of the ukulele.
I created some binding strips at 0.75mm and I am using contrasting timbers in Tasmanian Myrtle and light coloured camphor laurel, one strip of each for a total of 1.5mm. I then adjusted the width of cut on the router and a depth of 5mm. I used a down cut bit from carbitool for this. I also had to make a platform for the ukulele to sit on and shim the underside to suit the tapered back of the ukulele. All went really well, a fair amount of planning has gone into making this up and the binding is a perfect fit. I shouldn’t need to do much scraping once the binding is installed.
