Festool with Leigh D4R
There is an OF-1400 for sale in the marketplace saying something about it being hard to get guide bushes to work with the Leigh dovetail jig.
I use my Leigh D4R with a triton, but when I get sick of taking it out of the table I was thinking I’d get a festool router for handheld routing (probably a light one like a 1010, but maybe a 1400).
Are there problems using Festool routers with the D4R?

No.
You only need part "Leigh Template Guide Adaptor - Use TP & E Bushes (FE-493566)"
Leigh GBS Adaptor to suit some Bosch, DeWalt, Elu & Ryobi. Also suits Carbatec RM-9 guidebush set. | Guidebush & Adaptors - Carbatec
It plugs into the bottom of the router.
Zero hassles.

Ok that’s good news! Any thoughts on 1010 vs 1400? I like the idea of smaller and easier to see what you are doing for a handheld router (no table use).

Wot the pixie said.
I have the 1400, leigh guide bush adaptor, and a set of Axminster guide bushes. All easy-peasy
(That marketplace router seems pricey for a 10 year old machine to me. I paid $950 for mine, brand spanking new, full warranty and delivered to my doorstep last year)

Thanks Bernmac, uh, yeah I wouldn’t be paying that for a previous model, but my ears pricked up about the leigh issues he said he had.

Hi i have the OF1400 and use that. However in the past I did demo the Leigh jigs for Carbatec at Perth Woodwork shows and used an OF1010 router. This was really a great router to use with the Leigh jigs and will cover 90% of all you want to do with the D4R. Only the big dovetails that use 1/2" shank cutter cannot be used as the OF1010 has 8mm max collet size. Nevertheless a really great little router that can do so much more that just the Leigh jig work. Would not mind if I had one.

Thanks Les, that’s good to know! I thought it seemed a bit nicer and more flexible than a palm type round router for handheld work. I guess the collet size is the main thing that stops people going for it, it doesn’t seem anywhere near as popular.

The Leigh jig are nice, I never used one.
I have the OF1010 and OF2200.
OF1010 is very easy to use. its almost a palm router, My hands are not on the big side so for me its not a palm sander but I use it a lot. absolutely no issue using it single hand
OF2200 is so powerful it is almost like a portable spindle moulder. you gotta use both of your hand. I bought the OF2200 to do a 20mm deep x 12mm wide cut in one pass. the OF1400 probably can handle it but the extra power wouldnt hurt.
All Festool Router has its place or "better at" category. for me, OF1400 is too heavy for single hand use over prolonged period of time. hence OF1010.SCM L'Invincibile si X, SCM L'Invincibile S7, SCM TI 145EP, SCM Sandya Win 630, Masterwood OMB1V, Meber 600, Delta RJ42, Nederman S750, Chicago Pneumatics CPRS10500, Ceccato CDX12

What the others are saying the OF1010 is limited to 8mm or 1/4"collets so the guide bush adapter has to suit. However I think with the OF1400 collet sizes have a more flexible option from 1/4'' 8mm or 1/2" some collets are available I believe in either metric or imperial .I have the routers but generally use a Bosch 1300 router on the Leigh Jig,just find it comfortable without the expense of other guides for the 1400.
I also have OF2200 but think the need to use is not necessary considering the bulk.Johnno
