Default Does anyone make DIY cyclones (other than Oneida Dust Deputy)?

I am trying to avoid the time and effort it would take me to try make my own Bill Pentz.
(and I don't know if my metalworking skills are that great anyway)

But the only 6" DIY unit I can find anywhere is the Dust Deputy XL.
    Price in USA = $255 = AU$376
    Price in Aus = $549
Even allowing for shipping, I think $170 premium is a bit excessive.

    So is there any alternative?
I know that Aldav used to import similar Chinese units, and that there were ones on AliExpress, but neither are available any more.
And Tim (muchacho) makes fibreglass ones in NZ, but not 6".
And there are guys in the US churning out metal versions on ebay.

    Anything available in Australia?

I think if you tried to import one 170AUD would seem cheap and I suspect you won't find many if any DIY cyclones at all apart from BP's.

    Hi Chris,
Didn’t Clearvue start off just making clear versions of BP, but now they only sell full systems?

The parts are still available separately.
The naked CV1800 cyclone unit costs about $700 see Accessories and Spare Parts | Clearvueoz.com.au
    BUT
What are you going to drive it with?.
It has to be paired with a 15" 4HP impeller otherwise you are wasting your time.
    Good luck in finding these.

Most folks don't realise you can't just strap any old cyclone to any DC impeller and motor and expect optimum performance in terms of dust separation and flow rates..
Cyclones on vacs are a different matter because pressure losses are waaaaay less significant.
On a DC the cyclone/impeller/motor has to be appropriately matched otherwise it won't work very well/

    Thanks Bob,
I didn’t realise the naked cyclone was available in the accessories section until after I had posted above.
The price in USA = $450 = AU$663 before tax.
Clearvueoz price = $698 inc gst, so they seem to be profiteering far less than Timbecon.

Also, the Clearvue design is superior to the dust deputy - I’m a bit suspicious of the “cone-only” design (although to be fair, I’ve never used either)
They also seem to be the only 6” choices available.

I have the Oneida Super DD XL attached to my modified 2hp dusty. Works a treat for me.

What parameters did you include in your rating and how did you weight them? Do you have data for these that you can share?

Let's attack it from a different direction, when you get a cyclone what are you going to use to power it? I thought you were talking of a smaller unit than a CV. prices were always going to climb when the AUD dropped to its historical average so anything imported has risen that much at least. Bang for the buck if you want a fully ducted system that actually works and lives up to its rated specification CV is it and I doubt there is an owner that would say otherwise. The ducting is the same for any system, the extractor is the thing that can vary but in reality an Asian system comparable to a CV does not exist in Oz AFAIK.

So my goal here is not to just find a cheap Chinese knockoff. I’m really trying to see if I have more choice than the 2 already discussed.
(I also just remembered the CDS from Hare and Forbes . I originally got excited about it because it has 6” inlet and outlets, but then I read on here that it is a poor design.)

There are also the all-in-one systems such as this one or this one, but my understanding is those short stubby cyclones don’t do good separation. If I can get good separation I hope to vent outside instead of using pleated filters. Plus I want to use my existing blower. Which means I don’t want those all-in-ones anyway. Hence looking at available naked cyclones. (Or do we call them cyclone skins?)

Hi Geoff, do you exhaust through a filter or straight outside? I have concerns about the performance of the DD due to its cone-only design.

John you mentioned you want to use your existing blower. What size is it (hp and impeller diameter)?

Cyclones work best if the cone is longer than what is commonly made in Asia. They also need a bigger impeller because to work in the manner they do they are inefficient and it is exactly this that causes them to work. The CV has a longer cone and a neutral vane in it and it is the latter that was the break through in a small cyclone for hobbyists.

    John,
I have no filters or bags and vent to the open air. My setup is situated in a small garden lawn locker next to my shed so the dusty and venting is outside the shed. I live on an acre so no problems with neighboors, etc.
I also run a 6 inch ducted arrangement in my shed and I have yet to see any cloud or haze of dust venting from the dusty outlet.
The Super DD XL draws about 2-2.5 inchs of water (pressure wise) which leaves me with about 6 - 6.25 inches at the end of a 7 meter run of duct (my longest run). Performance is within expectations but I am looking forward to when I win the Casket to upgrade to a 3hp machine with a 14 inch inpeller.
In my "actual" opinion, the Oneida Super DD XL is a good product which does the job for me in my circumstances.
    Geoff
