THEO THE WOODTURNER - Joins the Brisbane Show with a new Woodturning Program:
Show favourite Theo the Woodturner will be running free woodturning demonstration across the 3 days of the Brisbane Show
The Program includes:
10:00am Turning wood into trees
11:00am The triumphs and pitfalls of pen turning
12:00pm Tea caddy spoon
2:00pm Bowl within a bowl
3:30pm Give your woodturning the best edge – the science of sharp
Details:
10:00am Spindle turning techniques Turning Wood Into Trees
Key points I will cover in this demonstration are: Over ten different tree designs. Wood selection and characteristics. How to form a cone the easy way. Tool rest alignment. Using a spindle gouge to do skew work. Getting the best finish off the tool. Eliminating catches. Straight and curved cuts. Using a beading tool. Adding colour for effect. Embellishment incorporating, knurling, spiralling and chatter work. How to minimise sanding. Finishing your work.
11:15am The triumphs and pitfalls of pen turning
Pen making is by far the easiest way to start the journey into woodturning.
It involves material selection, cutting blanks, drilling, gluing, tool selection, turning, finishing and assembly techniques. I will take you through them step by step, highlighting the potential pitfalls to avoid and the techniques that will give you a great result every time.
12:00 Tea caddy spoons
This design shows off the natural beauty of the wood grain and is ideal for measuring fresh tea or coffee.
Making the spoons involves many different techniques including, roughing down a blank, turning and sanding a small sphere, using a band saw safely to cut the blank in half, jamb chucking, hollowing the spoons, how to make and use your own drum sander to sand through the grades and finishing techniques and products.
This project is an opportunity to learn a multitude of techniques that will take your turning skills and opportunities to another level.
2:00pm Bowl within a bowl
Ever wanted to create an eye catching bowl. Then come along and learn how to turn a bowl within a bowl. The project involves techniques for turning a large sphere and then cutting it in half. One half is for the bowl and the other is for used for mounting the bowl off-centre so it can be turned. This is another multidimensional project which includes bowl turning techniques, correct use of a parting tool, using the indexing system on your lathe, how to mount your work off-centre safely, turning and sanding spheres, how to turn away the foot of your bowl, caressing the bevel when you are cutting more air than wood.
The bowl within a bowl project brings covers many woodturning tools and disciplines so bring along your pencil and paper, tablet or laptop and take copious photos and notes.
3:30pm Give your woodturning the best edge - The science of sharp
I will be discussing the different ways and means of getting your tools sharp and maintaining their durability so you can spend less time sharpening and more time turning while getting the best finish possible off the tool. I will explain the science that makes that possible.
The Brisbane Show is on from 20-22 March, 10am-4pm at the Brisbane RNA Showgrounds, Bowen Hills. Tickets are on sale now or at the gates.

I see this show has just been postponed, although realistically, with the logistics involved, you would have to think it would be unlikely this year.

Postponed?
I haven't seen anything, one would think they would update their webpage if so. I've sent an email but no reply, presumably one will come tomorrow when office opens. I would like to know so can organise accommodation etc.

Brisbane is definitely postponed. Click the link in their post above and you'll see they announced that on 13th March, and given the fluid nature of things, there's no clear schedule.

On their website it shows the Canberra show on 12-14 Nov. But not a venue.
Anyone know more?
