Madrone Burr, Rosewood, Mother of Pearl and Brass
For a couple of years I’ve been promising myself I’d make a jewellery box for a very good friend of ours who quietly does a huge amount for people who are disadvantaged.
In my ever-growing veneer mountain I found something that I think is Madrone burr - happy to be advised otherwise.
Wanting to make this a little more special than usual it has:
. Madrone burr over a rosewood carcass (rosewood from Trend Timbers)
. Bookmatched top in the same timber.
. Smarthinges and Smartlock from Andrew Crawford in the UK.
. Recessed brass feet from Brusso in New York.
. Inlaid mother-of-pearl escutcheon hand-cut (by me). MOP from Australian Mother of Pearl Co.
. Lining in lavender Alcantara/Ultrasuede (can’t remember where I bought this).
. Finished in Mohawk precat nitrocellulose lacquer over Mohawk precat n/c sanding sealer (ebay - from lmtc in Melbourne).
Not shown here is the tray, also in rosewood, finished and lined as per the box. As a little extra I put in a panel of maple burr on the underside of the tray.
Hope you like it.
Brian

Your last statement "I hope you like it" is an understatement, it is absolutely exquisite. From your description it appears that every component used was first class along with your workmanship.
I am sure your friend will be as impressed as we are.Dallas

Gee, thanks guys!
A couple of things I meant to mention earlier.
The tulipwood cross-banding came from Jay at Graeme Brown Antiques in Malvern, Vic. Auscab on the forum is part of this talented family. With boxes as you know, the small things make a big difference. Here’s a picture of two pieces of tulipwood crossbanding:

The top piece came from a well-known supplier of inlay. It is fairly typical of the banding I bought from this source. It is a disgrace, and the vendors should be ashamed of themselves.
The lower piece is from Graeme Brown Antiques. Superior in every possible way. My point is that it’s worth it to persevere in the search and not accept that you have to use inferior materials.
The second thing was the escutcheon. This fought me every step of the way since Mother of Pearl is very brittle and a beggar to work with. At best, all the drill bits I used made a bit of a mess of the edges.
Then came the Aha! moment. A couple of years ago I bought a set of diamond crusted burrs - only cheapies. Put into the drill press these cut the required keyhole shape very cleanly.

Thanks again for the kind comments.
Best regards,
Brian

Hi Brian, Lovely box as always. The thing I like about your boxes is how neat you get your internal lining, very perfect. Paul

You've done a beautiful, quality job there and I'm sure the recipient will be very grateful. It's worth using quality components on quality work, and I heartily endorse your comments about Andrew Crawfords brassware and Graeme Brown Antiques - both quality suppliers and great people.

Well done Brian, that is really exquisite. Particularly like the way you resolved to make your escutcheon

I don't know if you've seen a madrone tree. I hadn't until I was on a trip to Canada & Alaska 6 years ago. It's not a big tree, but it does seem to have quite a few burls and as you've shown, the timber is very nice.
These were on an island just north of Vancouver.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the pics. No, I hadn’t seen the Madrone tree before - very interesting.
A few years ago I bought a job lot of veneer from a maker retiring from business. He made boardroom tables etc for the big end of town. The veneer for this project came from that pile and there’s a lot of other beautiful timber there. Perhaps with the virus issues I’ll get more self-isolation shed time.....
Thanks again!
Brian

A very handsome bit of work.
I had no idea what madrone wood was before now.

Just for the sake of completeness, here’s the tray in place:

And the underside of the tray. Not something anyone will see often, but a little “extra” when they do

Back to the woodpile!

For curiosity sake, what are the dimensions of the box please?
It looks nicely balanced.
