Dalboy You got me thinking about that and I love my many wooden models but at the size Keith is working the painted parts really begins to shine and helps show off the many details.

No way Derek - Yours looks great. A very skillful build. Kids can't play with my loco whereas they can with yours.

Hi All,

Back onto the Thatcher Perkins. Making the base for the locomotive with the sleepers, rail clamps and rails. Making the base in 2 sections (otherwise too heavy) as it is over 2 metres long

The sleepers are made of pine and weathered using a wire brush on my angle grinder, digging out along the grain for the weathered affect.
There are 20 sleepers in total. They will be painted in a brown wash to highlight the weathering.

The rail clamps are cut out using various cuts on the table saw. There will be 4 clamps per sleeper. I have painted them in "Domino" and weathered them to look like they are rusted by using a wash of red oxide and dried using a hot air gun.

The toy making has been fun and enjoyable - but I love working on locomotives and their equipment.

Hi All,

Nearly finished this locomotive now.

Assembled the track. The track was cut into the rail section (I) using the table saw with multiple runs and then sanding the cuts. I then painted in "Domino" and as per the rail clamps weathered with red oxide wash to simulate rusting. The top of the rail is painted in spray paint (Pewter) to simulate the rail wear on the top of the track.
The ballast is small pebbles purchased from Bunnings plant department. They are available in small bags and are used to decorate the top of pot plants. I laid and secured the sleepers in position and then spread out the pebbles pretty thinly. I painted the base of the tracks in Mission Brown so if there is any base showing through it is camouflaged. I used a mix of 50% PVA glue and 50% water sprayed on in a fine mist to soak all the pebbles. I used one litre of the mix to secure all the pebbles and left for 48 hours to dry.
The rail clamp pins are cut down spiral head nails. They are glued in with 5 minute aradite.

I guess this project is just about finished. At least with all the restrictions our wonderful politicians have given us, we can still work in our sheds/workshops providing we have or can get supplies. Well done on getting near the terminus on this one.

Thatcher - Perkins is all done. It's been an enjoyable build. A few challenges especially the 2 step diameter changes in the boiler assembly.

Cathie wanted to take a photo of me with the loco - so have included that as well.

The final photo shows in the back room display area with a couple of my other locos - Stephenson's Rocket and the Stirling Single.
