Well today was spend sweating my butt of in Mr Old Grey beards workshop.
No Paul nothing like that!!!.
Bob lives approximately 6 min drive from we’re I live.
So I had arranged to visit Bob today and borrowed his lapping plate(a piece of 10 mm float glass approximately 100 mm wide 800 mm long.
After a few false starts with attaching the Sandpaper to the float glass.
I was ready to give the soul of the body a light shave or lap being the correct term.
Started with some 60 grit, and finished up with some 80 grit.
It took about 1 1/2 to get were I wanted, could have been quicker if I didn’t constantly stop and moan,
But once we hit the 80 grit, it did seem to move along quite a bit.
I think the 80 grit was actually cutting faster !!
I had one area behind the mouth opening that was a little lower than the rest, but eventually we got there,
I will give it a few more laps, then call it done.
We also had a play with the plane iron but that was more embarrassing then I wish to go into hear.
But the mouth just needs a little bit more work and the blade should just be coming through.
Thanks Bob for some fun and thank you Maureen for putting on lunch.
Cheers Matt.

Hey, we're only getting a tea-towel for background now - where's the tablecloth?

There's still far to many scratches in that base, it's a long way from 2000 wet and dry finish
Seriously looking good though

Well i rarely got passed 2000 wet sanding when prepping car paint surfaces so figured that would be far enough. I do have some Mirka Abralon 150mm discs 500/1000/4000 from when i was ten pin bowling, used then to do specific finishes on the balls, they get used these days for getting mirror level finishes on hardened shafts.
Seriously though I would think that dead flat mirror level finish would be undesirable and potentially sticky in use, the japanese planes have very little flat surface, just enough to align on the planed surface with large percentage of the sole being relieved away from the planed surface.

An that could be considered a Hot topic,
Similar to my Sharping system is the best because...... I’m sure we all know how that one ends.
But saying all that,[emoji6] I would if I had the chance Lap the soul of the body on a lapping plate if I had one suitable, just to see if there’s any advantage.
Which is the exact opposite of what your suggestion Phill.
Stanley planes, when they were making “prober” tools, did experiment with a corrugated soul on some of there planes,I think there idea was similar to the Japanese tool makers.
(Sally I need a lapping plate for Xmas please,)

Plane sole flattening, again...

Has been running a thread hear, and is trying to answer that very question,
Unfortunately Rob is also deeply involved in something else in his private life that takes quite a bit of his time.
Cheers Matt.

Stanley eliminated the pain of lapping with this little beauty:

It is a Stanley 340 “Furring” plane.
Have a read here of Patrick Leach’s appraisal of this somewhat unique tool!Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

We also had a play with the plane iron but that was more embarrassing then I wish to go into hear.
Result being that Matt got to do it with files and whetstones. Just as well the blade hadn't been hardened - but then he did need a bit more exercise
Apologetically,
Bob
