Matt, I used some stainlesss steel nails as rivets just a week or so back. I was putting a small blade block of SS on a sole that was also SS and I thought I should stick with the same stuff for the rivets to reduce the chance they will show on the underside. Before I tried peening the first rivet, I tested a nail by beating an end out as much as I could. It took the beating very well, no flaking or splitting up to more than twice the original width, but it was much harder to spread than an equivalent mild-steel nail (I often use ordinary bullet-head nails for rivets). I managed to set the heads ok & get a clean surface after filing off, but it took about 3 times as much peening (not exaggerating, it really did take that much longer) to spread them out. I was happy with the result, but glad it was only a few small rivets I had to set!
If I was going to do it again, I'd try & get some 304 grade rod from somewhere rather than SS nails. I think some of the places that sell stuff for model-makers have it. I used what I'm fairly sure is 304 for the sole and it peened far more easily - I think it's the softest grade of SS...
Cheers,IW

Matt
Thanks for the directions. It doesn't sound very inviting (particularly the place with the grass roots: not the sort of establishment I would be seeking out)). When you go past the Gold Coast don't you have to wear a harness because the fall over the edge is more than two meters?
Also I am a little bit shaky if the directions don't include a sequential and very logical series of pubs. After I have inquired at each pub I am even more shaky

Spent some more time on the “Body” today, between a little Xmas shopping trip.
The front knob is starting to take shape.
This was accomplished using files and a custom made sanding block, made from that precious material called Bog, or the sophisticated name of Automotive body filler.
I don’t think I would ever get a job as a pattern maker tho.
The design of all this is an evolving design,
Or some of you may say it’s being done on the fly.
Tho there has been plenty of Google imagine research done tho.
Cheers Matt.
I’m still 50/50 on using a Stainless steel nail to hold it al together with.
But don’t bin them quite yet Brad.

Mayyytttte, that’s looking mighty impressive !!!!
I think you should start sharpening those nails, don’t worry a about what the judges will think, stainless nails are the icing on the cake The Body deserves the bestBrad.

Hi Matt. Looking very nice indeed. And your pattern maker efforts paid off - nice crisp lines. What is the steel between the timbers for? Spacer?

I’m having a brain fart moment, please help.
An I’m not even classified as a senior yet[emoji41].
So I spent some time with a a lovely piece of Forest Red Gum, that is to become the rear handle, thank you Paul.
I just wanted to see what the proportions look like,so after picking my smashed jaw of the floor, what have I done mother of god, please see past my heinous soul, and sins, will I have no mercy, will my dark and twisted soul be cursed with with damnation for eternity?.
Cures my atheist views again!.
It’s bloody huge,it’s an abomination I have to reinforce my bench just to carry the extra weight while it’s sitting there.
I need a truckers tarp just to cover her rear end.
What must I do too see the light, or weight watchers at least.
Sad Matt.

It does look big. It also looks like you used a saw handle as template.
I thought you wanted to use an open handle and that's why you put a steel bed/frog in...
Otherwise maybe look/google for small smoother handle template or look into Ian's manual at the back. He has smoother template there. And then adapt that to your liking.
Unless you have it all figured out already and just wanted to make us believe you are in trouble and then pull out the most beautiful rear in the next post [emoji6]
