Thread: Structural pine from Bunnings?

Driving all around North Island NZ 2 years ago I saw seemingly never ending amount of Radiata pine plantations in remote places , some on slopes so steep you would wonder how they could harvest them safely.Maybe they are exported to nations with better currency rate than ours. dont know where it all goes, I observed huge forests of quality pine forests in Europe, and when i worked as a carpenter in the US all framing timber was Doug fir , Oregon.As a sideline i frequently pick up roadside lots of bedding base slats,quality untreated radiata , and the Ikea ones , Russian and Canadian sourced pine by the stickers on them, clear lovely old growth stuff , all free, Ross

Graeme, reading this thread did have me scratching my head too. I don't see any shortage of good, well priced pine here, and judging by the rate of new houses going up, the builders aren't either. Whilst I realise that Tasmania has its own pine plantations, I wouldn't have thought they would be enough to fully satisfy the current rate of housing construction, so wonder if we're in for a shortfall in the near future too.

Lance I’m building in the northwest of Tas and we are having a lot of trouble getting framing timber. It’s definitely causing delays for builders in our area.

Am able to get untreated pine studs from The Bunker in Beerwah:
90x35x2.4 (MGP10) = $7.35
70x35x2.4 (" ) = $4.95

I read an interesting article on this forum if I'm thinking right that said the difficulty with supply was due to share holders taking the cream and suppliers including the millers were not showing a profit
