So due to Paul,s very keen, eye and is great concern for my welfare, there’s been a massive redesign of the Gents saw.
But we will still be using Bloodwood, just incase we do need to let some blood out to apiece the Gods.

The lower corner of the saw plate is now know as Paul Curve.
Ive also changed the area between the Hexagonal and the front grip curvey thingy!!!

    Cheers Matt.

My local saw sharpener had Bahco 6" DEST in stock but when I had them order me in some 5" DEST and 4" EST they could only supply Pferd; Bahco's apparently are hard to get imported. "COVID" seems to be the go-to reason/excuse these days.

My experience in saw sharpening is somewhat limited but I'll be sharpening a couple of backsaws and re-toothing a 13TPI crosscut Lie Nielson in the next few weeks so this will be a test of how the Pferd files measure up.

Perplexed as to what to purchase. I was thinking Bahco as they're available locally in Gasweld but the saw file report here assessed them pretty extensively.

Interested to read about a bit of your setup to make saws.

    Cheers

Hi Nathan. I have been using whatever I could get my hands on but needed some small files for my recent saw project. Following IanW's advice I purchased some Bahco's from gasweld and they are the best I have used yet (quick cutting and lasting longer than others and some were used to file teeth from scratch). Get them if you can

Thanks mate. So I pulled together a quick Google spreadsheet to indentify the common sizes used in the saw sharpening guide online. Then (can't do this as I'm away) match up to the saws I have. Then I scoured online to find the sizes needed and cost. So far the only complete columns I can find are bahco. Even the pfred (apologies if wrong spelling) brand I can find one in the category of saw sharpening.

So yeah I agree bahco seem to be the most readily available. But to order online they sell in min qty of 10 per size. So I'd say I'll be going in store to find the ones I need

Graham McDonald Services, at Girraween NSW, has the largest range of files I’ve ever seen, the warehouse row of shelves full of different files is literally 25 metres long, they have everything. Well worth enquiring, I bought some saw files there and had a choice of manufacturers.

Some small but relevant progress was made this afternoon between sips of Gin and tonic.

Saw plate has been Wet sanded to 600 grit, and cut to a depth of 65 mm , for now,an one edge is true ready for teeth cutting!!
Will cut the plate to final length later.

    Cheers Matt

If you want to order a minimum of 10 there are some bahco 100mm files here

I’m also keen to see how it turns out [emoji6], Bloodwood is a new one for me, but my initial reaction is I like it.

Matt; it will be a lot easier to attach the hard back if you include a ferrule on your turned handle.

    regards Stewie;

    Matt

I agree with Stewie. Plus that becomes a weak point without reinforcement. The ferrule will strengthen to the point you no longer have to worry about the handle splitting.

    Thanks Stewie an Paul,

It pains me to say this, but you are both righ[emoji6], but in my defence I have not shown all my intentions clearly.
I will do a quick sketch later, as a picture says a thousand words.

    Cheers Matt.

Hi Matt. For what it's worth I like the look of your 1st handle more and I think it would be more comfortable to hold. I assume that the blade extends into a tang, which is inserted into the handle. Just asking for a friend

Due too my hand being forced, an Mountain ashes “Friend”
I’m hoping my interpretation as a drafts person answers many questions.
So Stewie,Paul, and the “Friend[emoji6]” my intentions are to insert a tube into the handle, the saw back will then be slightly cut down and inserted into the Tube, with two sleeves then inserted either side of the saw back(that’s a lot of inserting).
Sandwiching the back into the tube(plus some epoxy for good measure),I could also pin this in with rivets perpendicular to the tube through the whole handle (But not keen on that).
An it is only a small saw,not a giant killer!.
This will all be hidden behind first the decorative washer thingy(Because I can)glued and pinned into place.
Followed by the timber domeey thingy more glue!

I hope that all makes sense, and if anyone has suggestions on how to make all that even more complicated I’m all hears.
I’m mean there’s no use making live easy for one self.

    Cheers Matt.
