Looks like another great build Keith. I have been absent from model making and wood turning for a bit as both myself and the wife have been doing work in the garden and I have had a new workshop built larger than the last one. Also had a couple of additional machines installed which you may appreciate.

As for the shay look for a book by Kozo Hiraoka on building one THIS may also be of some help

That "Shay" photo book is amazing.

Great looking shed Derek. Hey you have pinched my Milling Machine

    Beautiful looking lathe too Derek.

Thanks so much for the info on the shay. I will get the book.

I have started on the tram. Making the bogie. It's a bit different build but am really looking forward to it.

Hope you and the missus are keeping well

    Regards

    Keith and Cathie

Both keeping well. I need to learn how to use the milling machine but the lathe is just a case of getting back to using a metal one.

    Derek,

Had a lot closer look at the Shay link. It's magnificent.

I have ordered the book. Only available through Amazon. Think it comes from the UK,

Thanks so much for the info.

Really glad that you are both well.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

    Out of lockdown.

Been working on the tram bogie.

There are a number of leaf springs that I needed to make. My method is to cut pine strips 1.5 mm thick and then glue the leaves together.(anything thicker doesn't bend easily)

    1.jpg

I have made up a number of fixtures with different radii depending on the size of the leaf spring.

    3.jpg 2.jpg

I then position the spring into the fixture (glue still has to be wet) and clamp in a vyce (as tight as I can)
I use quick setting PVA glue. Leave in tightened fixture for an hour.

When removed - the leaf spring is shape of the fixture

    4.jpg

Below are the 2 sides of the bogie. Leaf springs are just sitting in approximate location. The bearing retainers are aluminium that I machined up.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

Machined up the tram wheels on the wood lathe and the axles (out of aluminium) on the metal lathe.

The wheels are a press fit on the shaft. The bearings are a slide fit on the shaft.

    Keep safe

    Regards

    Keith

    Keep up the good work.
    Stay safe. Stay well.

Looking good I take it you have made both of them side by side. I have been looking at the Ballaarat loco build on another web site which I enjoyed watching. This being an Australian loco as well

    Hi Kieth.
Very interesting build Your doing . Thanks for posting it. I look forward to following this .

Reading your thread reminded me of an old tram I saw advertised for sale on Facebook . Located at Mt Evelyn near Lilydale 36 weeks ago, now sold.
I was amazed at seeing such pictures of a tram in this condition so I saved the FB link.

Its not your lovely Electric Tram from the 1890s . I don't know much about trams but I thought cable trams were the first type in Melbourne . Never thought Electric trams were that old . I just looked it up and cable trams were first in Melbourne . Not by much though . 11 Nov 1885 .
See link . Melbourne cable tramway system - Wikipedia

This tram carriage is part of a Melbourne Cable tram, obviously in rough condition . Maybe some details are similar and you can use them. Maybe you'd like to see the pictures or your friend the tram fanatic may like them.

I wonder where the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company was ? Where in Melbourne these carriages were made ? I just read the MTOC made these cable trams as well .

I remember my Nan talking fondly of riding around in these .
