Thread: Sourcing timber in regional areas?

Bunnings is the best around me and when I compare their prices to other options, often they are reasonably priced.

I pick up a bit from FB market place, got 75 metres of 140 x 19 Meranti at a buck a metre a week or 2 ago. Garage sales have yielded me some good cheap stuff.

Old furniture that people throw away or sell for next to nothing is a good source.

I try and check out recycling yards when I am in the big smoke, I got a heap of what I believe to be blue gum to build a bench from that I got pretty cheap.

I want to get set up to mill my own timber, always trees getting cut or falling down locally and the timber often just goes to firewood.

Ben you aren't too far away from us - my son used to travel across to Tamworth from here to attend TAFE during his apprenticeship.
Botique Timbers at Telegraph Point is a great source of a large variety of timber - seasoned and fresh cut.
He mostly does slabs but has plenty of other cuts as well.
Also many species are brought in as logs from elsewhere and milled on site.
I have bought Tasmanian timber from him for example.

If you have the machinery to tidy timber up then salvage yards are a possibility.Over here in the West I have been to timber auctions run by the Forrestry Dpt.There must be Forrestry outlets on the East Coast surely for another possibility.
Unfortunately I have seen a lot of good reusable timber dumped at the local landfill without any seemingly justification for it other than folk just want to get rid of it rather than bother offering it up on sites for sale.

+1 for Boutique Timbers - good variety, and they will help sort out the best way for you to get it.

To answer your question, for Plywood, I will hook up the trailer and head to Sydney most often - trademasterjoinery.com.au is one place among many. If you didn't want to travel that far or were happy with higher prices, Mister Ply Wood > Stores have a location in Newcastle - which isn't that far from you.

For other joinery timber, take a swing out to Dubbo: RAMIENS TIMBER | AUSTRALIA’S “BEST TIMBER MERCHANT” - whilst I haven't been there myself, they look like they have some decent stuff.

As others have mentioned, Botique Timbers is also a big go-to for me, highly recommend Mal & Greg, they will look after you well!

They have pretty much whatever size you want. Longer is more expensive.
