Default Squirrel Block plane , help kind of.

So ,I have a dream, ok, that sounds a bit weird.

    I’ve always fancied O , that’s weird too.

I feel another plane build coming on , O, I really need help now.
    Any Shrinks in-house??.

I want to make a Squirrel tail block plane, it really can’t be that hard surly, you just get some hard wood(it’s called metal)an you do some cutting and more cutting and more cutting stuff, then you do some bashing with a hammer thingy, and there you have it, I followed some blokes here doing it once I think.

Cough ,cough (it’s ok , I’m double jabbed settle down).

But ,my real concern is how do Squirrels feel in the hand(I have no shame).
Is a Squirrel tail plane comfortable in the hand to plane with?
I’m asking in concern for my frontal lobe.
And for those that need to ask NO I’ve never held one in either hand, or even had that pleasure( Don’t go there) of even viewing one in the flesh( Metal)

    Cheers Matt..

Wouldn't have a clue Matt, haveing never fondled a squirrel, but they look pretty silly to me. Maybe someone on the other side of the big pond will chime in, they have plenty of squirrels I believe.

I have a Lie Nielsen 100 and a vintage Stanley 100-1/2; these are tiny little planes used for very small jobs! Without the sqirrel tail their small size makes them uncomfortable to hold; especially as you would have the back end of the blade digging into your hand (see Stanley 101 for clarity here!). The tail is set very high; it looks out of proportion but allows a natural grip in the palm. At first it looks like the slightest dig would have the plane “tip over” due to the high tail; but because you can still put a finger on the front of the plane any “feeling” that the plane is about to tip over is eliminated.

Sounds like a fun project; popcorn on standby!

Here’s a few a mate cast back in the late 80s or early 90s.
    Stainless or bronze.
    Called himself Bowsaw Tool Co.
Got bullied into not using that name so walked away as he couldn’t be bothered changing the dies.
I’ve a few others in the stash, just bits but I’ll have a dig some are quite small.

Wow that plane without the squirrel tail is exactly like the one I was talking about that had a stripped thread in the screw that traps the blade the main difference apart from squirrel tail is mine has another blade possibility where the squirrel tail is.I previously placed it in the miscellaneous section and communicated with Squiggly gum [I think this is the right name ]

Ok Thanks for all the encouragement everyone,

So I had a serious think today about if I really need a another Block plane , an too be perfectly honest I don’t.
I all ready have a few.

Yep so I reckon just to be stupid I might make another Plane [emoji2957][emoji2957].

So if anyone who has one (Chief) wouldn’t mind just giving me some base simple measurements, that would be fantastic.
Especially around the Squirrels tail bit,

    Cheers Matt.

Here’s a few I dug out, probably a few more somewhere.
Also an original Stanley 101 plus Kunz and Miller’s Falls copies.
There was a squirrel tale as an add on to a normal block plane.
Possibly this might be the way to go, these had a wood ball or knob for your palm.

He made a wooden one. I know you want to use the "extra hard wood", but maybe some parts are helpful or at least interesting. At least he seems to like the squirrel tail.

Is your going to be fluffy? [emoji16]

    A tiny micro up date.

Mr Chief, has been kind enough to send his Little Squirrel tail, plane down from Queensland for me to get some base measurements from,
Well it’s wee little thing for sure.
So I now need to make some decisions on weather I stick to Chiefs plane size, or go opposite to Mr Ian W an up size it a bit.

    Immmmmmmm

    Cheers Matt.

So basically you need to decide if you make a Chipmunk, European Red Squirrel or the invasive American Grey Squirrel (that's from a European perspective)? [emoji6]
