Default Carpenters rule, how it was made

Just found this on YouTube, an found it fascinating to watch, Ive never used a carpenters rule, tho i think there’s one floating around on a shelf somewhere.
If any one can comment on the marking knife and square around 2.20 mark, I would appreciate it.

The square looks like it has an indexing pin to locate it. I have a small 12" version that was used by my Mother in Law for dress making and I used many of the wooden version before buying a plastic one which is very accurate and rarely gets used these days. I guess the invention of the retractable steel tape killed the use of that style of rule.

It's not clear to my eyes, but I thought the marking knife looked like a chisel sharp end embedded in a homemade handle.
    Or steel ground that way.
    Or similar.

I agree the marking knife is home made, the square looks like a small toolmakers square with the pin added later. Interesting I would be lost with my "Folding rule"

Hi Matt. Haven't watched the video yet but I carry a folding rule every day. In fact my work shorts are purchased solely on their ability to hold one easily. Long ago gave up on the 1 metre rule and hse a 2 metre wooden one instead

    Chris,
I actually think it’s just a pin too hold the stock horizontal, I watched the clip again.

Maybe it was an indexing pin tho.?

    Cheers Matt.

    Agree China,
I think the knife is either home made, or a cut down an modified chisel.

I'm sure the handled knife is made to strike a line of a certain width (as in, it's not really a knife, more of a plowing type cutter). It's striking a rounded line of width to be filled with ink later so that the lines are defined.

I know of only one toolmaker who could make a good folding rule at this point (made like the old ones). I don't think anyone will replace him - where do you even get good numerical stamps?

This is a rule made by that maker - he had to make the stamps.

Same here MA, when I was on the tools. Much easier to use than a tape for shorter distances. Isn’t it difficult to find shorts with appropriate rule pockets these days! I must say I’ve never seen a two metre rule.
I just happen to have an old 3’ example in the drawer beside me.

Hi P. Here's some photos of the one in my pocket

10 folds 200mm long. Made from Beech and unfortunately in centimetres. European standard I believe

Whaaaat, dressmakers measurements! And all those folds - I don't think I could handle it.
Imagine how many 100mm F ups I could make with that!
Truth to be told, I don't think I could handle being on site any more.

I do like a boxwood rule. Had my one over 40 years now. Its getting a bit faded on the outside face now but the face inside the fold is fine. Does anyplace still sell boxwood rules? As the eyesight will not get any better the faded side is getting hard to read.
    Regards
    John

Getting hold of Boxwood is getting quite hard, so I doubt there would be anyone making Boxwood ruler’s.

    Cheers Matt.
