Acorns.
Yes they did. But they weren't the Acorns of old, they were a very cheap version of the Stanley and came with an "Acorn by Stanley" label. They were the forerunner to the Stanley "Handiman" planes. I've never done a comparison between the "Acorn by Stanley" and "Handiman" planes, but I suspect they are very similar.
JA Chapman "Acorns" were black IIRC, while Stanley "Acorns" were red.

I have an Acorn (black) 5 1/2 and it is a very nice plane. My first purchase on my journey to hand tool nirvana. I especially like the beech handles. Not so great was the other plane I bought that day, an Ohio Tools block plane with a mouth so big you can get your finger stuck in it. Live and learn I guess.
