    Default New Side Rail Hinges

I have installed a set of these new polished Brass 40 x 8 side rail hinges that Aladav from the forum here has had made. I made a jig and fitted these examples to suit 12mm stock which is my most common. The box in the photo is 14mm stock.
The finish is good and the movement is firm with no free play in the knuckle, the screws are brass plated stainless steel and the price, depending on how many you buy, is a half or better of what you will pay from the overseas versions.
I think its time we abandon the overseas suppliers if they are not willing to come and give us a local supply.

Yes I have 7 pairs of Aldav's hinges also. I have only tested them in an offcut so far, haven't made a full box with them yet. They do seem excellent. And yes the price is at least half what the other two main UK suppliers charge.

I've got a few boxes under various stages of production, soon as I get them outa the way I'll test these ones out.

The overseas suppliers will still be viable, while these are a quality product, some of us prefer non plated versions.

They're plated with gilding metal. Gilding metal is a high quality brass with between 90 and 95% copper content. Gilding metal - Wikipedia

I am aware of what gliding metal is, don't get me wrong I believe your product to be of the highest quality, I just prefer non plated with anything.

May I please ask your reasons for preferring non-plated hinges China?

That's highly dependant on a number of factors. The compatability of the base material and the plating and the cleanliness and quality of the machining/polishing of the surface that the plating is being applied to are important factors. Passivation is a process that effectively removes contaminants from the surface to be plated. Plating brass with brass (there is an intermediate layer of copper as well) produces one of the strongest bonds of any plating process.

We've all seen failures in plating, there are few of us who would not have seen failed plating on chrome plated bathroom or door fittings, particularly when the base metal is an alloy of zinc. On the other hand I've seen chrome plating on copper and brass that is still sound after many decades. Broad brush statements to the effect that all plating will eventually fail can not be substantiated by evidence. Brass, as an alloy of copper and zinc, is subject to corrosion over time so it's hard to see how plating it with a highly compatible superior material can be a backward step.
