Smart Box Maker Hardware
Hi All,
One of the Australian wood magazines end of last year had an article about box hardware.
I have been finding it hard to purchase good quality locks lately. ( suppliers stocking Viola locks are running out of stock, Jacksons are rare as now as well) The cheap plated locks are absolutely a pile of garbage in my opinion.
I purchased 6 sets of the full mortice locks with matching hinges. It was the most economic way to purchase from the UK $1280.00 Australian. Broke the bank!

Hinges are 8mm X 45mm 3mm slot, locks are 8mm X 80mm face is 3mm slot lock is 5mm wide further 40mm slot.
Locks have 2 keys and all hardware has brass slotted screws provided. ( I use some steel Phillips for mock up fitment) No escutcheons provided in the kit.
Postage was included 56 pounds so about $100.00 Andrew Crawford was most helpful SmartboxMaker.com
Just letting you good folk know

Robert,
Yes, Andrew’s hardware is expensive but wonderfully precise. Have you looked at Ian Hawthorne’s Neat hinge and lock (fineboxhardware.com)? High-end stuff but a bit less expensive when I last bought from him.
Other souces of box locks are:
Anton Gerner in Melbourne: Catches & Locks
– Gerner Hinges
Paxton Hardware: Jewelry Box Locks, 1/2 to pin - Paxton Hardware
Lee Valley: Home page
Whitechapel: whitechapel.com

Locks
Only used on the high end commission jobs not for the small trinket box market.

These are only really intended for high end boxes sold by companies like Linley, who charge nearly $14,000 for a box like this:
Celestial Jewellery Box | Luxury Home Accessories & Gifts | LINLEY
Suddenly the cost of hinges and lock pale into insignificance
Or Little Halstock who produce what I think are the finest boxes in England:
Cabinetry - Little Halstock
I love looking at Little Halstock’s site just to see what’s possible (just not by me )

Brian

Best not to mention Linley within the hearing of Andrew Crawford, he's liable to go in to an apoplectic rage.

Unfortunately, his position is not unique. There are many small makers, and inventors, out there who have had their Intellectual Property appropriated by others that know full well the "little guy" has very little chance of achieving a mutually satisfactory outcome and exploit that imbalance.

Hi Brian
I was not familiar with Whitechapel locks and hinges so I tried to have a peak on the above website, but got a message "Domain name available for sale". Oops!
Bit of googling and I found it - an American site - that looks interesting:
- Home page - whitechapel-ltd
Thanks.

Last century I bought some brass cabinet hardware from Beardmores in UK.
They still exist but not sure what they offer now.
It was first class reproductions and I was very happy.

And that little guy can actually be quite large.
- GMC = Genuine Makita Copy
- LVMH has major counterfeiting problems (*),
- More Rolex watches made in China than Switzerland.
Intellectual property protection is incredibly difficult, incredibly expensive, and there are 200 jurisdictions in the world. Even if you do win against one company in one country it can just reinvent itself. Alpha-one phoenixes as beta-two, and the "game" starts again.
(*) PS: Anyone know where I can get some counterfeit Hennessy ... at the right price?
