Hi Bob
that sweedish bushman in your link under your dads spear and jackson looks very similar to wendys spear and jackson (same handle shape)

Hi Wendy
I have an identical saw at home and today out of curiosity i scraped the blade with a scraper and rubbed it with wet and dry about 360 grade?
the etching under all the rust and crud is about 150mm from the handle
it says work (picture of horse) horse and looks really grouse
above that is two hundred years of excellence
My handle is in a similar state as yours and will leave it on the saw just give it a bathe in 50/50 linseed oil and turps then when it drys ubeaut wax and 0000 steel wool
so persavere Wendy hand saws are more adictive than planes and heaps cheaper
have fun

Well, there's one thing that now seems to be happening, an interesting little plane turned up at home yesterday. I'll be posting athread on it today sometime, but, saws and planes do start accumulating! I'm just really looking forward to getting some space soon so I can set up a station just for restoration/sharpening.
Re the Handle: I might be able to restore the handle, if not, I'm sure I'll end up using it somehow anyway
cheers
