Floor timber and Furniture timber recommendations?

I wanted to ask some advice.

I've recently purchased a fairly old home, its about 80 years old. It had baltic pine floors which were really nasty looking, but they sanded up okay. Its a light golden colour now.

It was 2000 to sand and finish.. the finish isnt a satin or mirror shine, it just seems to be a matte thing, with the grain of the timber still able to be felt with your hand. Seems okay, but not sure if its a good job or not. Its very soft timber I know that, which leads me to something:

Should we have taken it all out and put a hardwood in? I love the look of Jarrah. We're talking 4 rooms of about 60m square total I think. Would that have cost more than 2000 you think?

Then we were looking at some furniture and the range of choices has just gone over our heads. We like the darker furniture, but now we're kinda worried that its not going to match the light coloured floor :(

We have no clue about types of timber that are good for furniture (book cases, coffee table, wardrobes, tv stand etc). A lady told us they were using Acacia which is a hardwood? Sounded okay, they stained it 'ironbark' which was a tad darker than the floor but not too dark, so it felt like an agreeable compromise.

Is there any timer for furniture like the above examples thats really unbeatable?

Would it have been more then $2000. you bet ya it would have.
we sell 80x19mm Jarrah Flooring for $6.20 lm ($77.55m2) so for your 40m2 it will come in at $3102 for the raw timber. but the time it is installed, sanded and finished you might get some change from $10,000 but not if you wanted to take out the old boards!

Jarrah is an amazing timber for furniture. Hard and heavy but looks amazing!

I think $2000 is not realistic.

I did 3 rooms in my house a couple of years ago. I did everything myself except sanding. The whole thing costed me around $3000. It was a lot of hard work and also I got the floor boards cheap.

As for colour matching. I have a house full of timber furniture. I made all of them, they are made from different wood with different colours and they look nice together. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You can save some money by doing it yourself for sure. I put down around 60m2 of recycled tallowwood and blackbutt a couple of years ago from start to finish and it worked out to around $60m2. It took a long time and was hard work but worth it in the finish. Just recently I had about 45m2 of bamboo supplied and installed for around $6K. It took 3 days. There's advantages either way, it's really your choice.

As for timber furniture, I'm with Wongo, timber goes with timber. That's the beauty of it.:)

Bryan, how do you like your bamboo floor? They are starting to hit the market here. I quite like the look of it.

The bamboo we have is a woven finish without the easily distinguishable bamboo look. It looks more like a fine grained ash without knots. I think I prefer the look of natural timber to the bamboo, more pronounced grain and contrasting colors compared to the consistant look in grain pattern and color. The preinstalled finish on ours is very hard and will resist those "broken heel stiletto" round dent marks. However it does swell up a bit if it gets wet. You can't take a mop and bucket to it but have to use a damp mop. But having said that I still like it and it's very durable.

Most importantly SWMBO (wife 2.0) preferred it to timber so installed it is...
