Anyone know what timber this is?

Hi, old filing cabinet I've stripped, I know nothing about timber.

I'm guessing it's mid century in date, my dad can remember very similar looking filing cabinets in the police station he worked at in the 60's.

Front and sides appear to be the same timber (very straight darker lines running through it).

Top is different (the grain goes every which way).

Any ideas? Thanks guys.

I don't know a lot about timber, if i had to pick from the few timber's i know, it looks a lot like some ash i bought once, but that's just my guess.

There is some people on this forum with years of knowledge and experience, i'm sure you'll find help from someone who has more knowledge than me.

yeah looking at pictures of ash there are similarities, the only thing that makes me question that is the fact that every single darker line is dead straight, none of them curve or go squiggly, there are no knots or eyes (or whatever the technical term is). Plus the thing weights a tonne and isn't ash a lighter timber?

Could be Blackbutt or Flooded Gum, Ash, all very similar. Or something completly different.

And it is an Aussie OAK type of timber,- Tassie Oak; Mountain Ash, Hard, & heavy timber. Deadly for splinters along sharp edges, ( discovered THAT problem when fine sanding the edges !! ) Comes up quite nice timber when sanded and sealed. Takes wood stain quite easily. The old cupboard I restored had some type of cheap industrial lacquer sprayed on it to make it darker, but after I successfully sanded that off, and left the flecks,( which was the original grain-filler ), in the timber, I used a Baltic Stain Colour, ( what the owner requested ), then applied several coats of Danish Oil to seal it. Never thought to take a photo or two at the time, which would have complimented this reply.
( Nowadays I TRY to remember to take photos,- as in, " T-R-Y," to remember!!!!!!! )
