I’m very new to woodworking and have inherited the above table and is has a ‘guide’ on the side nearest the saw ; at the head of the machine, can anyone tell me what this is/ may have been for? Tia.

Not sure what you're meaning but suspect its the rail the fence slides along to limit the width of your cut.
That's at 90° to blade
parallel to blade there's a slot to take the mitre gauge.

I used to have one and quite liked it. The planer was good but I found the saw a bit underpowered. Still ok for small work. This may be of use to you.
