..This is made out of a piece of Amboyna (pteracarpus indica) I had lying around..
(a dodgy back decided I was going to sit down for a while and texture it)
700mm high..textured, ebonised and sanded back..

That's a beauty Undie. I'd reckon doing that pattern would have momentarily taken away the dodgy back which I'm sorry to hear about. It reminds me of the piece you did and got tattooed in NZ I think, actually I don't think I saw that finished :?
Jusxt wondering if the work had anything to do with the fires Undie?
..nope, not fire related springy, this is a revisit to some pieces I did a while back..
just a really simple form that I could sit and relax while texturing..
a combination of influences...african masks, female figure, Rene Magritte paintings, Maori face scarification etc
Very nice Underfoot, love the texturing, just wondering what tools you used and how you did it??
Ditto robthechisel. Most curious about hollowing the back of the mask.
The front has a "finished" look to it, I'm trying to decide what makes me think that.
I really like the ambivalence of the overall design.
Love this piece Undie!!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:
I might feel a bit embarrassed I I had to wear it!!!
Ta for the feedback:)
oops.. I didn't take any pics of the roughing out..
I bandsawed the shape ..then roughed out the front with an 100mm arbortech type disc on an angle grinder.
when I was close to the shape I wanted I gutted the back out with the same tool..then sanded with a right angle drill with abrasives on a soft pad..
I textured with a 1/4 inch ball typhoon burr (fine) on a flex shaft dremel..then cleaned up the mess with a 1/4 inch ball metal burr.. (the first burr cuts fast and accurately but leaves it furry, the fine metal burr tidys that up)
...hope that helps.
Yeah thanks Underfoot, I thought you'd done the texturing with a dremel but it looks a very symmetrical pattern to be done hand. You must have a steady hand, when I try something like that with a dremel I find it hard to know what speed to use, too slow and it drags and looks shaky, a bit higher and it shoots in the wrong direction sometimes. Anyway, great job:2tsup:
Thanks, undie. I figured it was far too big for something like a Dremel.
Toss up between the traditional Pacific Northwest native carver's elbow adze
or some convenience like a Lancelot. Wish I had the nerve to try that.
In theory, I have a Sitka elbow adze blade (small) in the post from Kestrel Tool.
Several mask WIP that have needed hollowing for a few years.
I like it a lot. The texture effect is lovely.
First thought you did it with a gouge, maybe because i don't use that much power tools.
Btw, what is your opinion about the arbotech disc ?
