Chai's Linear Bearings
Hey guys,
I managed to stupidly drop lacquer on a bearing and destroy it so had to reorder some more SBRUU16 from him. While I was removing tthe bad bearing, I noticed that there's this little rubber edge on both sides of the bearings, I assume that this is some sort of squidgy designed on not letting dust get inside. I've got my new bearings now and want to install them on the rails, these rubber squidgy edges are really contributing to a lot of friction on one side of the bearing, to the point of probably getting the table to lose some steps, I did have that problem before.
So what gives? anyone had problems with that and how did you fix it. I should probably mention I never used lube on the rails but I did just buy now a can of dry lube from Jaycar, will the dry lube fix this problem?

Mate you should not get enough friction that you lose steps you could try some lube but are you sure that everything else is ship shape and realigned the way you have it before.
Do you have one of those adjustment screws in the middle of the bearing block if you do maybe that needs to be slackened off a bit.

I'm just pushing the bearing in the rail by hand, its not even attached to the extrusions yet. You can see the rubber edge get stuck into the side of the bearing insert and make it hard to move. Its pretty tight but now that you mention it, I tried it again and yeah, I guess it wouldn't make it lose steps. I'll try some lube and see what it does

Put the bearing in the extrusion and adjust a Sean says. I expect they are sprung slightly so that when you mount it it will conform to the extrusion. Being slightly open it will allow the seal to fold under.
The seals are meant to scrape so expect some resistance but not enough to loose steps obviously.

Might also be the grub screw in the back of the block making it tight.. might be worth adjusting for a look see.

Thanks guys I fixed the problem. While I was changing the bearing it also gave me the opportunity to tweak the gantry a bit and I figured out what my step losing problem was. All should be good now :2tsup:
