flytrap bottle stopper
Hi,
This flytrap had been turn into a lamp, and lost its stopper.
An opportunity to try my gouges on my small scaps of olive-ash, and test the "Ukibori" technique on the wings.
It involves compressing the wood (here with an iron wire and a small hammer), sand it, then straighten out the fibres with hot water.

Beautifully fine work. Love the detail... and on such hard wood too! I've seen this done on a carving of a toad. Was going to try it myself, now you've given me some incentive. Its also the first time I've seen a fly trap like that. I reckon our summer flies would just carry the whole thing away:~

I've said it before...fancy design shops for you!
I have never though of a fly as beautiful until now. I tried 'ukibori' on the swimmers arms, but it was a failure. Do you think hard wood is easier or harder to achieve this?
Oh yeah...I want one.
