My father in law told me about a finish he learnt on saturday. He said put some thinner in a jar and add polystyrean (not sure if i spelt it right) until it disolves and thickens and then use this. Is this a common finish?

sounds a bit like a home-made nitro cellulose lacquer, there was a thread recently by someone who had a recipe that was ping pong balls dissolved in thinners. It might work, but it would be difficult to ensure consistency from one batch to the next. NC lacquer is pretty cheap anyway, hardly worth all the mucking around. NC lacquer is available in different gloss levels which is probably not the case when you brew it yourself.

It is worth re-stateing this is also called BATHTUB NAPALM I doubt I would be covering anything I didn't want to burn long, hot and dirty with it.
It is sticky, burns for ages, produces thick black smoke, and is hard to put out. DAMHIK
I've heard of it being used as a grain filler/sanding sealer but not as a final finish.
