Anyone Know make of this Lathe?

Hi,

Ebay got to me again! Bought this old lathe as a restoration project. Came on old home made workbench with a Record vice.

Has no manufacturer's name or markings.

Has a Demco plate on it, that's it.

I'm thinking 40's or 50's, but really don't know.

Apart from the surface rust on it, its in great condition (could be buyers blindness).

It came with plenty of old tooling etc and surprisingly a shaper clapper box of unknown manufacturer. It is small though, even compared to my Douglas 10".

Any info would be great.

ps you can see the Sterling drill press i picked up last weekend in one of photo's, I tried picking it up myself hoping to put it on work table, no chance in hell.

This is going to be interesting. I am not able to help with any information on the lathe. :no: Are you going to do a work in progress on this?

My whole garage is a work in progress!

I will do as much as I can, but it will probably be a long term (and hopefully cheap) project for me. I get side tracked so easily these days.

It has a bit of a vanguard look about it but it is a safe bet I am wrong. I do though love the fixed and loose pulley set up. Obviously it dates back to line shaft days.

It is definitely a Portass lathe , made in Sheffield England. Possibly a slight modification of an S , X or XL model , it is hard to say , then sold under another name .

I sent a email to Tony at UK Lathes this morning after looking through his website to no avail. Now to do some reading and then the fun starts!

No worries mate . It sure helps to have some pictures and info on the original lathe models before you start restoring . Sometimes the owners make modifications or add new parts that may make model identification hard.
Like a tailstock can be dropped and broken and they replace it with a later model that fits perfect but has a different casting shape and look .
