Sydney Blue Gum, Brass and some wooden hinges.
This is a document/keepsake box I have made for my Godson and it is made from some recycled Sydney Blue Gum that was recovered from a very old factory demolition. The original piece was a support post about 2 mtrs by 150mm square and this was recycled into 12.5 mm boards. The box dimensions are 375mm x 285 mm wide x 130 mm High.
I have always liked the combination of oiled hardwood and brass and my intention was to get this contrast in this design.
The box is constructed using box joints on the corners and edged with square brass which is pinned and epoxy glued to the rebated edges.
The hinges are made from Purple Heart and flush inlaid and again epoxy glued. The Brusso lid stays ensure that the hinges are not subject to stress when the box is opened.
The central inset in the lid is an Elm Burr veneer and there is a brass engraved nameplate inlaid in the sandwich. The tray and box are lined with green leather suede. The box has been finished with Organoil and waxed.
