A shooting board is used to trim the edge of a board. You hold the board along a edge that is 90 degrees to a hand plane. The hand plane is on it's side with the cutting edge exposed to the end grain of the board.
You now push the hand plane along the board and the smallest shaving are taken off. You continue until you get one complete shaving which indicated the board is now at 90 degrees to the edge that the board was originally pushed against.
You can also setup for other angles.
